It’s a spring, and it works well as the spring. I don’t know about the longevity of the product, but it appears to be paid with a black thick coat of paint. I think it should last for several years. But appears to be a well-made spring.

When I first saw it on the picture and considering my relatively heavy gate I was skeptical, but... I said let's give it a try. Well, I am glad I did. It works excellent and I didn't even have to give it maximum tension!

I needed these to attach to my gates so that they close quickly after someone enters or exits so my dog can’t escape. I have 3 gates. I originally bought one from my local home hardware. The part that you tighten the spring with needed to be done with a wrench and a small piece of metal that you slide in. I found it really hard to do with the wrench. My hands aren’t that strong. But I saw in a few you tube videos that they make these with adjustment rods and tension pins and it looked much easier. That is why I purchased these. I thought the instructions were fairly understandable- but it probably helped that I had watched a few videos on how to install these. The thing I do not like about this product is the cheap screws. The tops of all of them (where the bit goes in to the top of the screw to turn it) completely stripped. My bit was completely fine, but the screws are completely unusable now. I got 2 of them all the way in. One on the top and one on the bottom. The other 2 screws I only got halfway in. It doesn’t look pretty but it works!! The adjustment rod with the tension pin was much easier for me to manage and I was able to tighten it as desired. It closes quickly after someone enters or exits! Works great. For the next one ( in this pack of 2) I will get some better screws from home hardware to secure it!

We have a very high traffic backyard with the kids and the dogs, so we put these on both gates going into our backyard to ensure the gates closed and our dogs didn't get out. They were easy to install (we watched a couple youtube vids first because the instructions were a bit vague). They have been in for most of the summer and now with the colder weather setting in, I can say they work great rain or shine, heat or cold. Would recommend.
