ATSG CHRYSLER 46RE 47RE 48RE Transmission Technical Manual is necessary to diagnose, overhaul and/or repair these transmissions. The 46RE, 47RE and 48RE family of transmissions by the Chrysler Group, are fitted behind a wide variety of engine sizes, including diesel, and across various vehicle lines. They are also available in 2WD and 4WD configurations. Beginning at the start of production for model year 2005, Dodge trucks equipped with the 5.9L diesel and 48RE transmission were equipped with an electronically controlled Transmission Throttle Valve Actuator (TTVA). This Actuator has replaced the previous Throttle Valve Cable and all associated linkage. A push-in Transmission Range Sensor was implemented in model year 2002 to replace the screw-in Park/Neutral switch. The 46RE, 47RE and 48RE transmissions are all four speed fully automatic units with an electronic governor. They are equipped with a lock-up clutch in the torque converter. First through third gear ranges are provided by the clutches, bands, low-roller clutch and planetary gear sets in the transmission. Fourth gear is provided by the overdrive unit (rear section) that contains an overdrive clutch, OD/direct clutch, overrun roller clutch, and planetary gear set. These units contain a front (direct) clutch, rear (forward) clutch, and OD/direct clutch which serve as the input driving components. They also contain a kick down (front) band, low/reverse (rear) band, overrun clutch, and the overdrive clutch which serve as the holding components. ATSG breaks down the process step by step to provide you with a very detailed description on the "how to" help you in repairing, overhauling or servicing the 46RE 47RE 48RE transmission. ATSG technical manuals are written and produced by ATSG's professional technical staff. They have over 100+ combined years of experience, knowledge & wisdom. This book is extremely detailed for rebuilding a 48 re transmission. The best reference I have seen for tearing anything down and rebuilding.

Very well put together, I had finnished the trans before this came but I had a clip left over a my d I was able to rule out that it wasn't apart of the assembly with this. And I also was able to trouble shoot wiring and see changed they made between the transmissions on the valve body allot of information in one book great perchase for sure. I found if you don't drill the plates like the shift kit tells you to and get your clearances in the looser range of what the alto wants with they're performance clutch pack clutches and tighter range of what the factory specs want when you have the wavy clips in you get a nice and like factory shift with all the sonax servo upgrades but with better power potential. Glad I had this book

Lots of really valuable information but lacs detailed photos on a lot of things. Would be nice if it did include detailed photos for reference other than just exploded view diagrams.

I have worked on many pieces of equipment in my 63 years but never an automatic transmission... so I was a little nervous about tackling this project. My Dodge Ram 2500 tranny had 185,000 miles on it but it was still working. Since I had to pull the transmission to install a new rear main seal in the Cummins motor I decided to give it a try. This manual was excellent to work with and by following the manual step by step, much to my surprise, the transmission works and shifts great...however on the first test drive I was really depressed because it wouldn't shift right...as I started to pull the pan to see if i could see something obvious I noticed I had missed plugging the harness into the electronic throttle control valve...plugged it in and problem solved.I made my spring compressor tool from 3" x 12" sch40 pvc pipe with an access hole cut in the side. I used my output shaft to assemble the overdrive section before installing clutch packs on it. That's why the 12" long pipe was needed to compress the OD spring with the stock output shaft.

This book is what you need if you want to build your own transmission. It has a lot of good information that is very helpfull. From what I read and have been told about people getting their transmission rebuilt they really did not need a complete rebuild and had to pay big money to get it done. I was told by three different people it was going to cost $1200.00 to $1600.00 to fix mine and I refuse to pay that kind of money when it was out already. Plus it was something that happen all of a sudden . So I order this book and fixed it my self for a $187.00 and it works better then it did because their are updates in the book that help it shift better
