Recently I noticed that squeezable sport drink bottles are prone to back wash when you stop squeezing them and the suck back air and water into the bottle so I tested the water with these to see if there was detectable bacteria in the bottle. And, lo and behold, the bottle turned blue. Gross. So I've stopped using sports bottles that squeeze. Your results may be different.

Product Packaging: Retail PackagingProduct Experience: Easy to use. Made of plastic. I'm guessing these work as my last two tests showed no signs of bacteria. The cost is not bad given that there are a couple tests provided.Pro: Product ItselfCon: None YetOverall: Recommended

As a home inspector in Southern California, most of the water I deal with comes from public systems, but there are always a few clients who rely on their own private water supplies. For those clients, it's essential to know if their water is safe to drink, and the Purekra 6 Pack Coliform Bacteria Water Test Kit provides an easy and affordable way to check for potential contamination. This kit is simple and effective for detecting coliform bacteria, including E. coli, in drinking water, well water, or even pool and pond water. However, it’s important to note that this is a fairly binary test—it either detects the presence of bacteria or it doesn’t. A positive result indicates that further professional testing is needed, as this test only checks for one type of contamination. Professional testing can provide a more comprehensive analysis of the water supply and any other possible pollutants that could pose a health risk. The testing procedure is straightforward, and while the kit is user-friendly, there are a couple of things to be cautious about. First, the liquid in the test vials can stain surfaces, so it’s best to use them on non-porous materials or surfaces that can be easily cleaned, as porous materials like marble countertops may absorb the liquid and stain.Another important point is that a positive result doesn’t mean your water will always be contaminated—water quality can change over time, so a single test is only a snapshot. For that matter, the same is true for any aspect of an inspection - you can only report the status of a home system at that exact moment in time. It’s important to establish a regular testing routine, whether weekly or monthly, to monitor your water supply and ensure that it remains safe.Overall, the Purekra Coliform Bacteria Water Test Kit is a great starting point for homeowners who want to ensure their private water supply is safe. It’s affordable, easy to use, and provides valuable information that can help guide further action if needed. Four stars—reliable for initial testing, but follow-up with professional testing is recommended.

I got this after reading a story about a local child who died from an infection he had obtained from a splash pad at a local park. I gave it an initial try by collecting the sample from some standing water in our backyard and it did not change color after 2 days. I was getting skeptical, since this standing water was from my 3-yo's rather filthy looking water table after it rained a few days earlier. But the real test was when I took samples from the splash pad at the park we frequent and after two days it turned dark green! This meant the water was laden with harmful bacteria. Thanks to this product, we were able to identify and stop exposing our child to that water, as well as warn other parents, along with the facility management team. This is a must-have product if you care about the health of your loved ones, as well as yourself.

When moving into our home, the well water failed inspection and was not treated properly. When testing your well, let the cold water run for 5-8 minutes before taking a sample. We found our cold water tested positive, but the hot water was clean. After treating the water I would test the cold water every two to three weeks. The multi-pack is convenient because of our frequent testing. Be sure to add bleach to any positive results before discarding.
