It is very light weight. It definitely gets my German shepherds attention. You can make different sounds or at least the hertz is easily varied

As I read the reviews, especially those that were negative, I realized that some think this whistle is a magic tool. Like all training tools for all animals, meaning has to be attached to the sound. For example, for many of us who work with dogs over a long distance under some pretty rough conditions, the single tone can be singled out by the dog. For example, I give 3 pips in quick succession to signal that I want my dog to come back to me. That was taught with a handful of treats and a long line. I would peep-peep-peep as I brought the line in and the dog was rewarded with a morsel. I would let them go off again (line attached) and repeat the process. With my guys it did not take long before they needed no line to come in like the wind to get a tasty morsel. Training takes consistency & repetition & a paycheck. What I like about the Acme whistles is that they are STRUDY plastic (metal can do you lips bad damage in the winter) and they have lasted me for years. I tend to replace them every 4-5 years because I have a bad habit of biting mine when training (was never good with pencils either) & I like a new whistle. Each of us has our own 'sound' when delivering pips - the dogs can tell if it is me or my trainer who called them in (smart, they are). Also, when I was learning, I practiced my pips in the car when there were no dogs to get confused and no people to annoy. That way you can figure out what works for you and how to adjust the volume with your blow strength. In the Upland word we use 2 additional calls: One pip means SIT; 2 pips means change direction. Both are trained behaviors. Anyway, I really like the Acme whistles (PS the 211 is a little louder than the 210 - if I am annoyed, I may pick up the 211 if I have not gotten the response I expected with the 210 - I presume it is a little louder to the dog and the sound carries further -).

I love these little whistles, loud enough for the dogs but not ear splitting for the trainer.
