I guess they sort of do the job, but the design is not very good for fitment. Cannot use the anti-rotation strap as the rivet is right on your shin rubbing. Also, the shape of the lower section in general is constantly rubbing on the shin. I have bruising from every ride. It's just poor ergonomics. The profile of it is nothing like the section profile of a lower leg in a human person. Overall it is a disappointment. Wish I could send them back, but now that they have been worn, it's money down the drain. I had high hopes, but these just suck.
