Hey guys, I got a badly scratched CD. Yeah I know it was used, but there was no way to get it, except used. The thing is, that condition was supposed to be USED VERY GOOD. I was only able to get it to play by applying peanut oil to the surface of the disk and wiping it down, so I could put it in the computer and rip it and then burn it to a blank CD, so all I have is a copy of the disc in the jewel case. You might ask, why didn't I return it. Because, they didn't have any more and according to what I've learned in researching it, Amazon sold me a collectors original archived CD of Jackson Browne's, I'm alive album, by accident. I know this, because the picture and the artwork is from the original album, now a collector's item. So yeah I'm keeping it, I may consider professional restoration of the CD, as I really like this Jackson Browne.

I was a big Jackson fan all through the 70's & 80's then got more into country music in the 90's. So now I am trying to catch back up to what Jackson was doing in the 90's. This album although it might not compare to some of his early albums, it isn't too far off. Some of my favorites on the album (sorry still refer to them as albums)are I'm alive, Too many angels, All good things, & a classic Sky blue and black. I am sorry I missed this one when it came out but I am making up for lost time. I will being seeing Jackson for a third time in one year in concert next month on his acoustic solo tour. Even without the whole band he is entertaining and actually quite a funny guy. Me and my wife are back, Jackson, to being a couple of your biggest fans. Looking forward to seeing you in Hammond.

In all honesty, I didn't have high expectations for Jackson Browne's 1993 album "I'm Alive". It's not that I had LOW expectations, but it's just that I'm used to key '70s artists being, not necessarily washed up by the mid-'90s, but generally past their prime. I started listening to "I'm Alive", getting deeper into it... It wasn't long before I realized that this is not just another album. It's no wonder this was hailed as a comeback--the 4+ year time span between this album & his previous album "World In Motion" was the longest gap he'd ever had between albums--but it's not the kind of deal where some artist has put out a bunch of misguided albums, & then goes back to their "classic sound" & ends up with an album that's at least decent as opposed to poor. Quite simply, this is a masterpiece. Jackson wrote every song here himself, & the album is supremely tasteful--you won't find a single drop of the distressing arena rock leanings that are found (on certain tracks) on the "Lawyers In Love" & "Lives In The Balance" albums. This album is not without a '90s adult contemporary sheen, with the occasional atmospheric synthesizer & "politely"-distorted guitars, but it works beautifully thanks to one primary ingredient: Jackson Browne. Yes, the melodies are great & the lyrics are great, but there's something else to it--a charisma element coming from Jackson... When he starts to sing, it captivates & you can't help but become immersed in it. Even when he sings a simple line like "I don't want to live without your love again", from "I'll Do Anything", he does it with such gentle desperation, it's captivating. There are a couple of spellbinding, haunting minor-keyed songs on here with "I'll Do Anything" & "Too Many Angels", & a great bluesy-rocker with "Miles Away" (with a melody reminiscent of "Disco Apocalypse"), but all the other songs are in major keys, & even with so much sorrow in the lyrics, the songs are breathtakingly bittersweet & life affirming. For instance, on "My Problem Is You", the lyric is about the frustration of waiting for a lover to come around, but with the music & Jackson's vocal, it expresses these feelings in a wistful, upbeat, laid back way that is absolutely beautiful--it even masks that the verse melody is a carbon copy of "Somebody's Baby"--it doesn't FEEL like a recycling of it (the song also strongly recalls "Enough Of The Night" from "World In Motion"). Also notice Jackson slipping some great humor into the album--the sarcastic lyrics (which have an ad-libbed feel) on the fade of "My Problem Is You", & his reggae raps on the giddy, irresistible reggae-flavored "pop"-rock tune "Everywhere I Go". The album-opener, the brilliantly-crafted, driving title track, is a reflection on a very serious relationship that has just ended, & it's so defiant & full of hope, it's overwhelmingly cathartic. "Take This Rain" & the heart-wrenching "Two of Me, Two of You" both display eloquent, beautfully sad, hard hitting romantic lyrics which are beautfully sung by Jackson--he is in *outstanding* vocal form for the entire album. Clearly Jackson is still an obsessive perfectionist when it comes to his vocals--on "My Problem Is You" alone, there are noticeable "cuts" as if different vocal takes have been spliced together--but you can't blame the guy when he's in such terrific voice. The epic, "Late For the Sky"-ish "Sky Blue and Black" masterfully brings closure to the album. In a way, it makes the last song, "All Good Things", feel like a bonus track. With its message--that although "all good things got to come to an end", other good things will come & take their place in one's life--it seems that Jackson wanted to end the album on a little bit more of an upbeat style as opposed to the extremely sad (but beautiful) "Sky Blue and Black", although ending the album saying that "all good things got to come to an end" is not exactly a cheerful album closer. "All Good Things" is a bit slight & feels somewhat like a toss-off, but it's still strong--every other song on the album though, is flat-out superb, & I really mean it. I'd like to mention "Sky Blue and Black" again... Wow, almost beyond belief--it finds Jackson basically taking all the blame for a broken relationship, & it's such an overwhelmingly bittersweet, tender, heart-tugging love song, it's impossible--impossible, that is, for anyone except Jackson--it's no wonder listeners would say it's the best song he's ever done. Jackson had already repeatedly proven himself a unquestionable master of resonating songwriting & performance well over a decade before this album came out, & with this album, it doesn't feel at all like he was trying to make a "comeback" per se--he simply dug deep down once again, drawing from his own personal misfortunte, & shared his insightful wisdom with us, expressing himself in a profound, poetic, deeply inspiring way. He gives everything on here & how can you ask for more than that? Seriously, I can't even tell you how great this album is. If the compliments I've given to this album sound like the same things you could say about the "Late For The Sky" album, well, that's because like "Late For The Sky", this is classic Jackson Browne. I don't mean it's merely in his classic STYLE--this is truly another masterpiece in his discography. If you've ever been moved by Jackson's music & haven't given this album a try yet, grab a copy & really listen to it--it's essential. By coming out with an album this special & stunning at this point in his career, if anything, he showed to us all he's even more of a genius than some may have given him credit for. Listening to "I'm Alive", it makes you feel glad that you're alive too.

It's said that great artists find inspiration in life's trials and tribulations, and that sure helps to explain the single best album Jackson Browne has produced in the last twenty years. Written while suffering from the well-publicized breakup of a long affair with a most beautiful blond bombshell of an actress, Browne's fervently fertile mind uses the palpable heartache to deliver a song cycle overflowing with blue-eyed California soul. From the opening lines announcing that to his own growing bemusement and amazement "I'm Alive", Jackson lets us know that this is the best that can be hoped for under the circumstances. This is the ultimate in a modern concept album, one that painfully, faithfully and artfully essays the emotional realities of a long-term relationship and giving us a rare view into the interior of life in the emotional fast lane. All of the songs here are good, but some are absolutely wonderful. I especially like "Take This Rain", "Two Of Me, Two Of You', and "Too Many Angels". As always, Browne's use of lyrics is so masterful that one reels at the power of description and expression he brings to bear on the subject of love gone awry. Of course, there are few words to describe "Sky Blue And Black" other than to say it is easily the most phenomenal song he has written since "Late For The Sky", with guitar work and vocals that are simply magical. The song cycle ends with a soulful summary of sorts with "All Good Things", which he reminds us, must come to an end. So must this review, but not without me giving a high recommendation for this album for any and all Jackson Browne fans. Enjoy.
