INGREDIENTS: maltodextrin, (blue) cabbage, (purple) radish, and (orange) annatto extract

Each kit has enough color for 1-2 dozen eggs.

INSTRUCTIONS:
What you need: Boiled eggs (1-2 dozen), white vinegar, spoons, and cups.
- Empty each color packet into a separate cup.
- Add 1/4 tsp water and blend thoroughly with brush to dissolve the powder.
- Leave for a couple of minutes then blend again.
- Keep mixing until all the powder has dissolved.
- Add 1 Tbsp white vinegar to purple radish and blue cabbage only (not orange annatto).
- Add 2 Tbsp water to all and mix.
- Put eggs in cups and turn over gently with a spoon to cover all sides.
Dip quickly for pastel colors. Leave for several minutes for deeper shades. Take egg out with spoon and set in tray or empty egg carton. To combine colors, dab egg dry with a paper towel and dip in a second dye.

For our egg dyes we use cabbage for a deep blue, red radish for a magenta/purple and annatto, an orange-yellow color extracted from the seed coats of a tropical tree, achiote. Annatto is a common natural food colorant, most widely known for giving cheddar cheese its rich golden color!

The coloring commonly used in food colors and sprinkles (FD&C Yellow 5, FD&C Red 3, FD&C Blue 1, FD&C Yellow 6) are artificial, petroleum-based chemical dyes that has been linked to behavioral health disorders, allergic reactions and contain known carcinogens. I was trying to find non-toxic egg coloring for my toddler daughter to dye Easter eggs. Overall she ended up having fun but I think this dye is more geared toward adults. To dye the eggs any color other than the standard 3 the package comes with you have to be very patient. Also, the dye doesn't fully cover the egg so you have to keep turning the eggs in the cups to cover all sides. That being said, I do appreciate that these have no food coloring and they come from naturally occurring substances. But for kids and toddlers the cheap kits are probably a better option.
