I spent a heap of money building a bike from the frame up. For the drivetrain I opted for a Shimano Deore 12 Speed groupset. I have a ton of bike tools but have used other cranks in the past and am new to Shimano's mounting hardware. When I got my bottom bracket and crankset it came with a plastic version of this piece. I know it is just made to help seat the cranks all the way onto the splines so it doesn't need to be grade 8 hardware but I just didn't like the plastic so I started searching around. I found this and when it arrived I was happy with the build and anodizing of the part. The threads were crisp and it fit like factory. Now the tool leaves something to be desired (but gets the job done). What you get is an allen key with an adaptor to fit the part. They are held together with a button magnet that is less then strong and the tool has no shoulder or stop to keep it in place. When installing the adapter came off the magnet and slipped through the cap; thankfully it is a hollow crank so I was able to push it out the other side. For as limited use this tool will get and the fact that it was included where Shimano did not include a tool earns it a pass in my book. It did the job and the part I got looks and functions better than expected. The whole bike is black with red accents so it was a nice addition and way better than what Shimano provided. Forgive the grease, this was a new build and Shimano goes nuts with grease on their crank shafts. I wanted to get pics while it was fresh in mind.

This threaded into my Shimano XT cranks perfectly and the included tool fit both the new and old caps as it should. Be aware that the torque spec for these caps is very low, so you do not want to crank on the handle they included too hard. That's actually why the Shimano tool only has a couple of small wings. You shouldn't need the leverage of a full length allen key to tighten this and if you do something is probably wrong.I will note that this one sticks out of the crank just a tiny bit further than the stock one, which was mostly flush to the crank surface. In quite a few miles of riding since I installed this though, I have yet to notice that on the bike and I actually kind of like it from an aesthetic perspective since the whole reason I got this was to see it. Now when I look down at my cranks I can see the edge of the oil slick poking out.
