The difficulty of this soldering kit can be summed up as a walk in the park. It's easy to complete with very few varieties in component types coupled with large contacts to make it extra friendly for beginners. This calculator can be powered in two ways--coin battery (included) or via mini-USB cable. The user is left with a fully functioning 6-digit calculator at the end of a successful assembly. Although how useful a 6-digit calculator can really be is certainly up for a debate. I deducted a point as it comes with nay a single spare part which was both a surprise and a first for me from a soldering practice kit. 4 out of 5 stars, there's very little room for error with this bundle.

Worked the first time it was powered on. Obviously not that useful as a calculator but it's not supposed to be. It definitely performs math functions and does what it can, but only 6 digits and limited math functions makes this more of a toy but that's what it is! The case is nice. I really like the idea of it. The display is quite a bit brighter when run from USB because the voltage is 5V vs 3V from the battery. Some technical info regarding the battery. A typical battery like this is 200mA-hours. I measured 10mA current draw from the battery with every display segment on, and 40uA when it's off. What this means is you should get at least 20 hours battery life when it's on, and about 200 days when it's off. Ok, but the "off" current I think is a little high.

My son started getting into electronics at his middle school science club, so we started him off with some basic soldering kits found here on Amazon. Unlike some of the other kits, which focus on only basic solder joins and rely heavily on breadboard components, this kit is a great practice kit for diving into surface mount soldering. The components are large and durable enough to survive several rounds of joining and removal, so great for practicing your technique. Now, he not only has the coolest calculator in his math class, he's also well on his way to becoming an electronics technician. This kit is a simple soldering kit, that contains parts large enough for even younger kids. It does not come with solder or an iron (make sure to get flux soldier, and a wick if you're just starting out). The large visual instructions should be easily followable for most folks (you can't really go wrong as each component is easily identifiable where it needs to go). For those "true" beginners, I might also recommend watching a few YouTube videos on proper soldering technique - but once you get the first one or two components down, the rest should go pretty quickly (my 13 year old son was able to complete this entire kit in 15 minutes on his own).Overall this is a great practice kit to get you into (or back into) soldering.

I like soldering kits that let you build something useful while practicing your soldering skills. Granted, everyone is walking around with phones these days that have calculator apps and can look up resistor values, but there's something cool about assembling a gadget yourself out of basic components. This was a fun kit to put together. It doesn't take long to get it finished, and gives a good bit of basic practice on soldering thru-hole components. All parts were included in my kit, and it was packaged well. They even include a case for it, something a lot of soldering practice kits don't do. I'm pretty happy with it.

I have been teaching myself to solder so I can get deeper into the making my own keyboard rabbit hole. This kit was perfect for me: good soldering practice and I had a finished calculator at the end. It’s not an advanced calculator, just basic functions, but if I’m going to practice, I want to have something functional at the end. Like an electronics building kit.I think the kit is a good value. It contains everything needed, so it’s easy to use and it’s functional right away.

VERDICTBuyWHYThis is a really fun kit. The quality of the components are good and it's a fun kit to put together a calculator by using that electronics knowledge. It's a decent sized calculator and I love the mechanical switches.

Really good soldering practice kit BUT very small components for attaching case. If you drop a nut it’s gone forever. No extra parts. Each button has four soldering joints and the cpu has 28. The back part of the case on mine arrived cracked and a piece came off with the protective layer but I didn’t know this until I had already finished all the soldering. The front top part of the case also had a small crack. I would not recommend based on the quality control but would recommend if you just want a kit with a lot of solder joints.
