For science or otherwise, this is hard to put down and well engineered. Edges are slightly bevelled as described, and the piece is crystal clear. This will likely have a permanent home on my work desk, 5 stars.

UPDATED REVIEWI returned the original damaged block for a replacement. When the new one arrived, it was just as thoroughly packaged and protected as the original one was. And, it was in... somewhat better shape. It wasn't chipped. There were far fewer scratches, and they weren't as deep. But it was still very far from the perfection you'd expect from an optical item, particularly considering the great care taken in packaging it. I honestly don't understand what could be wrong with their manufacturing and shipping process. What I have is adequate for class demonstrations, and that's about it - certainly not suitable for any serious lab work or measurements of any kind. And given the unreliable and unpredictable quality range, I can't recommend this - give something else a try, it's unlikely to be worse and could very well be better.ORIGINAL REVIEWNot only did this glass refraction block have a noticeable chip in the corner, but also large scratches in the center. This is odd, because it was very thoroughly packaged in protective paper, plastic bag, cardboard box, bubble wrap, another cardboard box... I don't think it was damaged in transit, but rather, during manufacturing.I'm going to send this one back and request a replacement. If that one is better, I'll revise this rating, but I see others have also reported receiving damaged merchandise, so if you don't have time to mess around with returns, you might be best served by a different choice.
