When I applied this the first time, it was shinier than the Gamvar Gloss. I couldn't figure out why, but then I realized I hadn't shaken the bottle. Next application went on matte like it was supposed to.

I used this on 3 pieces of my dry art work, and it streaked. Every one of them. Left a street.It has a sheen very faint, and clear streaks.Terrible.

I was worried about the milky appearance after reading other reviews. I shook the bottle, per the directions, and didn’t put on too heavy of a coat and it turned out wonderfully. I love the Gamblin products

Gamvar is my go-to varnish for varnishing my oil and acrylic paintings. I recently needed a matte varnish to varnish an oil portrait that I was entering into an important competition. I needed it quickly so I ordered it from Amazon and got it in plenty of time.The good news is that the portrait was accepted to the competition! This is the first time I've been able to get into this competition.Gamver varnishes are made with Regalrez synthetic resin which is an excellent varnish resin. It is mixed with Gamsol, which is a very mild odorless mineral spirits.Traditional varnishes require waiting for about 6 months for the oil paint to fully cure. Gamvar can be applied when the painting is "touch dry". This usually take two or three weeks to achieve. It's still best to wait as long as you can before applying the varnish though. See the Gamblin website for more information on how to test the paint.To apply it, DO NOT follow instructions from YouTube! Use a stiff, flat brush to apply very thin layers. It doesn't take much. I usually apply two layers. After applying it, inspect the surface at an angle to make sure you have even coverage.I use gloss, semi-gloss, and matte varnishes depending on the painting. Some look best with gloss, some look best with matte.Excellent product and reliable delivery time!

This is not a new item for me but a new size. I love this brush on varnish because I once ruined a 40 x 40 painting with spray varnish. Unfortunately I didn't notice the drip until the next day. As a result I nowuse the brush on varnish because I can see what I'm doing. The small size lasts long enough but doesn't dry up as quickly as a large bottle. It arrived very well packaged and timely. I would definitely recommendthis supplier.

I use a combination of the Gamvar matte varnish and the satin version of the same product in different parts of the same painting to give different effects. The flat is extremely flat, and the satin is quite glossy. Both are very forgiving; I have painted oils over them and painted satin over matte as well as matte over satin with no ill effects. Strongly recommended!
