I also have a previous model which I use regularly. It's invaluable for reaching people when out of cell service areas. I bought this newer version for my husband's use. I highly recommend it.

I just took my new Explorer+ to the bottom of Grand Canyon(and back). I was impressed with how quickly the unit captured 3D satellite tracking. It seemed like less than a minute although I didn’t time it. Garmin has done a good job with the User interface with a simple and intuitive control pad and function interface from the Home menu. Battery life was excellent and could have been even better with improved battery management practices.I especially liked the Quick Reply and Shared Tracking functions, allowing quick communications using standard pre-written texts and allowing my daughter to track me on her iPhone during my entire trek, something she enjoyed doing. I would highly recommend the Explorer+

I replaced the Mini that I bought last year because it seemed to take a long time to connect to satellites and since I hunt by myself most of the time, I want to be able to send out an SOS if I need to immediately and not be second guessing if it has made contact with the satellites. I haven't used it yet but have it attached to my hunting vest, just waiting to go.Last year I used the month-by-month subscription package but this year I activated it for the whole year. It is about the same money when you figure in the yearly activation fee on the month-by-month package.
