I was looking at other generator disconnect setups for manual / occasional hookup for a generator... and after setting this one up, I am not sure why they exist in the first place. This is a simple and brilliant solution.Basically, you add a 30 amp breaker pair into the top right position in your box, and hook the 220 generator feed to that. You connect it via a high amp extension cord, outdoor outlet, and heavy 10 gauge wire. I think the outlet was $30 or something, the wire was the most expensive bit.I actually have two panels, and I used two of these kits, and parallel connected both, so it feeds both boxes. You should never work in your box unless you know what you are doing, are willing to take some risk, and know how to do it safely. But it wasn't a hard install. Fish down the 10 gauge wire, screw it on to the 30 amp breaker pair, and snap it in the box. On one box, I just moved two breakers that were in that upper right hand corner to new positions. On the other box, I was able to move all the circuits down two positions to add the new pair. Though that means you have to re-label the whole stack. Also when drilling the holes with the included drill for installing this plate, do yourself a favor and use a punch do your drill bit doesn't wander and get the hole off center. I like the spring loaded punches where you push down and it clicks to set the dimple. If you do that, your holes will be perfect (you trace them from the plate as a template) and install will be easy. Now, when we lose power, I will drag out the generator, hook up the extension cord to it and the outside plug, fire it up, walk down to the basement, turn off EVERY breaker, then turn off the main power switch for the box. That then clears the obstruction for this plate to move up, which then clears the obstruction for the 30 amp breaker pair to be flipped to "closed". The box is now fed from the generator, and the line is safely locked out. This is important, not just because accidentally having that in the wrong position will kill your generator as you try and power the whole city, it could kill a lineman working to restore power. Then I flip on the breakers for just what I need and what the generator can support. So fridge, freezer, sump pump, house lighting (switch to LED to get a ton more margin), etc. To make it easier for family members, I cut little squared of electrical tape and put them beside all the "start with these on" breakers for things that you probably want to power and that the generator has sufficient power for. Then when the neighborhood power comes back on, you go back down, flip off all the breakers, flip off the generator feed breaker pair, and that un-obstructs this lockout plate to slide down out of the way of the main disconnect switch. Pop that back on, turn on the breakers one by one (but not the generator input breaker, which this plate will be blocking anyway), and go up and put away the generator and extension cord.

Good product they might consider having a sticker to target the drill holes. The other thing they could do is inform people as to weather or not it is advisable to install a ground fault circuit for a back feed generator a lot of people don't know the answer to that. They also might offer the option of buying a center drill with the plate to help get the hole started.

This was my first time doing this type of installation, and I’m proud to say I managed to do it properly. Initially, I wasn’t sure which interlock I needed, but the listing provided helpful measurements and supported brand names, making it easier to confirm that this product would work for my setup. The package included a manual, the product itself, and some stickers. The packaging wasn’t impressive, but for this kind of product, it might not matter much. Following the manual, I drilled holes in the panel using the included drill bit, which worked perfectly for the task. The interlock performed exactly as expected and did its job flawlessly. Just make sure it fits your panel specifications, and everything else should go smoothly. Overall, I’m satisfied with how this turned out.

I wanted to add a backup generator just in case and was perplexed by the price of these interlock kits at the big box stores. It's just a couple small pieces of stamped aluminum with some bolts... there is no reason they should cost over $70. The one thing I would say that is not up to snuff is that, although a thoughtful touch, the drill bit that comes with this kit is worthless. The first thing you should do is throw it away and find a sharp one. Other than that, this is a great kit.
