I ordered this about two weeks ago, and after reading some of the negative reviews I had my doubts. After I received the package I immediately found out that every negative review on here must have been from those on the softer side. The reviews on the assembly had me thinking it was going to be an all out project. That couldn’t have been further from the truth. If you just take all the parts out of the box and lay everything out, it’s a no brainer where everything goes. Took me about 10 minutes to put this together on the back of my tailgate. There were also a lot of negative reviews on the winch that comes with it. Ehh...yeah it’s a cheap winch. Will it get the job done? No doubt in my mind. And if it doesn’t, you can buy a much heavier one anywhere for $25. With the price of this set up, there’s nothing you can argue about. It’s a strong build, the swivel feature works like it’s supposed to, and most importantly it’s got a guide for the gambrel to go into so your game isn’t spinning while you’re trying to skin it. This is priced very well, and so far I’ve been very pleased with it.

I bought this because I was tired of struggling or calling for help to load my deer. I read the reviews on here, and incorporated some of the modifications suggested by other customers.-The winch is a bit chintzy. I suppose if you only use it once or twice per year It's OK, but I bought a much better one for less than $20 and used it in my assembly.-The gambrel and plates that keep it from rotating are well made, but I don't field dress a deer upside down, so it's of no use to me. Maybe for skinning. Who wants all the innards running downhill into the rib cage? The money used by the manufacturer could be better used in providing a a better winch (see above).-There are 3 main sections to the frame, and they're held together with a bolt and a cotter pin. Having it broke down in 3 sections is more convenient for stowage, and less weight to lift, but who wants to drop a nut or cotter pin or nut in the snow, or at night? As one reviewer suggested, I installed spring clipped clevis pins throughout, even though the holes are 2-3 different sizes.-As another reviewer pointed out when broken down in 3 sections, the winch is located on one section, and the pulleys on another, promoting tangling. I drilled a couple holes and installed the winch on the top section. This also provides for a more comfortable height for cranking the winch.-I didn't use the steel cable provided, I installed 1/4" nylon rope. Wire cable is prone to rust, and stiff, especially in cold weather. If it frays at all, you'll have individual strands of wire poking you. Besides, why do you need 800 lb capacity cable on a hoist rated for 300 lb? Again, the cost of the cable could have been better utilized elsewhere. If anyone else decides to do this, make sure the rope you use is rated for the required weight, probably nylon and not poly.As a former engineer, maybe I'm a bit critical......If I had it to do over again, I'd have bought the Viking Rack Jack 4x4, sold here on Amazon. It already incorporates the modifications outlined above. And by the time you buy a sturdier winch, they're the same price.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D451MTL/ref=sxbs_sxwds-stvpv2_3?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_p=6375e697-f226-4dbd-a63a-5ec697811ee1&pd_rd_wg=TBFdO&pf_rd_r=09T0CXDAN8S7A287JZG8&pf_rd_s=desktop-sx-bottom-slot&pf_rd_t=301&pd_rd_i=B07D451MTL&pd_rd_w=TrYOa&pf_rd_i=Viking+Rack+Jack&pd_rd_r=c6b318ab-d3b7-47cb-a18d-5d91b646a94e&ie=UTF8&qid=1541252043&sr=3Bottom line: It's a nice sturdy hoist for the use intended, and well priced. Design could have been better thought out.

This is Fabulous! I was going to have a buddy make one for me, but instead I ordered it at the last week possible. The parts alone are worth the money. My wife shot a antelope this past weekend we hung it, skinned it and quartered it without problem. The only CAUTION I might add it that I am a few inches over six feet and my wife kept warning me that I was very close to the upper forks (Gambrel support) - she wanted to make sure I didn't add any blood to our antelope by splitting my head open. I hitched this to my 4wheeler, artic cat, and it seemed happy. That might also suggest why the gambrel securing forks were close to my head - but be cautious! It works, yea! Lastly the bolt and nut concept becomes horribly unnecessary when on a dry plains of the western United States, so we tossed out the nuts and replaced them with wing NUTS. They don't have to be cranked on super tight, they just need to secure the square tubing inside other square tubing. We might actually go with the secure catch pins on the next trip to save a bit more time. Think about it, western states of the US and 90 degrees and you need to skin and quarter a pronghorn antelope - time is not on your side! I am very happy with the product. Even if it by chance, which I don't think it will, it fell apart or become bent, it was worth the price I paid just for the 1st time I used it. I am not sure it will hold a 600LB Elk, but it surely will do mule deer, antelope and other wild and entertaining meats from the dusty country in the great West!
