the slider slides to the right as slicing. you have to have the item placed so the steel enters the block on the left then it stops on the right and wont slide.

My wife loves hasselback potatoes but they are a little bit of a pain to slice up. I thought this potato slicer would make the job a lot easier, and it would, except there are several design flaws here.1. The cage is much wider than the wooden block that it slides on so the wood block keeps falling out. I've tried squeezing the cage to make it narrower to stay on the block with very limited success. it doesn't want to compress at all.2. The nails that stick up through the bottom to hold the potato are more trouble than they're worth. Potato juice can leak down around the nails and get on the countertop as well as soaking into the wood base. The nails are actually held together with a metal piece that will do a nice job of scratching the countertop as you're using it. I would recommend using the slicer without the nails at all they don't add anything to the experience.3. The wood base appears to be unfinished so any kind of liquids are going to soak into the wood and give you problems later on. The wood surfaces as well as the slots and the nail holes are all places where dirty water and potato juice can soak into the wood.I gave this two stars because it does sort of work and do the job, but I cannot in good faith recommended for kitchen use. I think there are issues with it being unsanitary and with scratching up my countertops.I've already removed the nails and I will try to compress the cage further to make it fit the wood but I'm still concerned about the wood soaking up unsanitary liquids.

This cutting guide could conceptually be good, but it is unusable as provided. As you can see in the photos, the spacing for the lower leg is too wide, and the rail falls out of the slot in the wood base. (or, its possible that the wood base is cut to small) I would expect a little bit of play, but this is totally out of the slot. Also, the rails on each end are bent inward, making it impossible to pass a knife through,This is actually my second try of one of these units. The first was exactly the same so I requested a replacement, hoping that the second one would be better. No difference. I can only attribute this to poor manufacturing quality control.I may be able to clamp this in a vise and squeeze it together to make it work, but I should not have to do this.I gave it 2 stars because the concept is great. Place your potato (or other item) on the 2 small spikes, slide the guide in place, each time you slice down, you are assured you will not cut through the bottom.
