I bought this to replace the busted off key on my John Deere Z445 riding mower. I don’t know why John Deere engineers decided to put the key on the left side which you used to trim around trees and inevitably a tree branch will snap the key off, but they did. This is a much more affordable alternative to a factory John Deere switch from your local dealer, at a fraction of the price. Just as functional, it just doesn’t come in a green and yellow box.

Quality, ease of installation. Found broken ground wire while changing out switch. Repaired wire, decided to use new switch.Better quality than original switch.

My John Deere Zero Turn switch went out after 11 years and 253 hours of operation. Had what appeared to be erratic starter problems (motor would turn just a little every time I would turn the switch, until a sweet spot was hit and it would start). I didn't realize the problem was the old ignition switch and so I replaced the battery (3 years), original starter and starting solenoid, checked the fuses and finally replaced the ignition switch with this one. It's an easy install (see the 10mm hex bolt towards the bottom of the photos. Unscrew that and the panel lifts up). The mower finally started up consistently again. Yeah! 5-stars. Happy DIYer.But then I go out to work on the mower this morning and it won't start. Whaaaat? Checked the voltage at the battery, good voltage, no current drawn from it when the ignition key was turned. Checked the seat switch and safety cutoff switches. Those are fine. Finally removed this HD ignition switch and measured some resistances across the contacts. Higher than what I would expect when contacts were closed (I'm a former electronics tech and engineer). Cycled the ignition switch multiple times and thought I'd try one more time. The mower started, phew! So the switch is finicky, not as reliable as I would want. For the extra few dollars, I would recommend going with the OEM switch (even though it doesn't come with keys or carabiner - use your old key). I'll use this switch until it hiccups again, then replaced with the genuine JD switch.
