Short review: I love this product and I recommend it if you want your 4Runner to have a sportier feel and deeper louder engine noise. I’m very happy with the results including install, aesthetic, and drive quality.Long review:I sat on the idea of purchasing this intake for my 2008 Toyota 4Runner for quite some time. I’m very meticulous about any modifications on my toyota, as they are well made from the manufacturer. I’m aware that the stock air intake is a cold air intake by design, the intake duct pulls air straight from the fender well. I confirmed all information in this review with scan tool data readings from the intake air temp sensor. This K&N “cold air” intake by design takes in a lot of hot air due to the lack of insulation and it does not use an air tight box. However, with the use of scan tool data I saw some different results. At highways speeds the air intake temp (with K&N intake) was about the same as the stock intake (about 4-8 degrees higher than ambient air temp) which is pretty good. At speeds below 35 mph and at idle the air intake temp was considerably higher than with the stock intake due to the intake design pulling in a lot of hot air from the engine bay coming through the radiator and condenser. The sound and performance really was what made me love this product. I have a flowmaster exhaust which is still relatively quiet (to me), but coupled with this intake the engine sounds completely different. It has a much deeper tone on aggressive acceleration, yet it is still quiet at cruising highway speeds with no drone. The conical air filter is much less restrictive, and the intake duct has no baffles and curves to slow the air and quiet any noise. If you do not want extra noise on 30%+ acceleration do not buy this product. If you do any sort of off-roading I would not recommend this product (unless you use a filter sock). The filter is less restrictive which is ideal for performance, but it will allow more dirt particles to pass through the filter into the engine. My 4Runner is a 2WD pavement princess, with the exception of camping trips and long road trips on rougher terrains with more dirt. This modification works well for my use and my preferences. I have a lot of respect for Toyotas engineering as they do make amazingly reliable cars, but the stock intake is quiet and very restrictive compared to this K&N intake which is generally what sold me on this product. This is by no means a “cold air intake” and the small increase in throttle response I feel may be a placebo effect. I don’t have a dyno to test the theory of the claimed HP and torque increase. However the sound and aesthetic to me was well worth the money. Install was simple with the correct tools, directions were not very great but that’s more a concern for those who don’t have mechanic/technician experience. I give the product 5 stars, only con is it’s a falsely advertised cold air intake but that’s not enough to deduct a star as I knew that upon buying it. Love the product, K&N is a good quality name brand. 100% worth my money and time.Update:After a week of highway and city driving my gas mileage has went from 18.2 avg to a 19.4 avg. Small increase in gas mileage, nonetheless an increase

Makes the 4runner sound alot more powerful and pairs nicely with the GIbson exhaust and URD y-pipe. More air in, more air out. Nice cleanable filter, No gain or loss in mpg, don't expect huge gains in hp or torque. If i did alot of offroading id most likely avoid it but im happy with it on the daily driver.

I have been looking at these for some time now for my 2008 4Runner and finally pulled the trigger. Being mechanically inclined, as I work on all of my own vehicles for most issues & maintenance, the kit took about an hour to install. If you're not familiar with your vehicles intake system you should plan on the install to take much longer. Once installed I did notice a nice increase in HP all along the RPM ranges but especially at high RPM ranges (

I had a TRD Cold Air Intake installed on my 2010 FJ Cruiser, and I didn't benefit too much from it. Apparently the factory intake has a nice straight tube from the fender well to the throttle body to begin with, so spending $300 to get a cold air intake (to remove sound baffling) wasn't very wise on my part.So I wasn't expecting much from this K&N intake for my 2004 4Runner. Although, if you look under your hood, you'll see the factory intake has a big S-curve in it, which can't be good for airflow. But I still wasn't expecting much from just an intake, with everything else on the vehicle stock.I was in for a surprise. While it sounds and performs exactly the same if you're driving normally... when you stomp on the gas, it really shines. The engine gives out a loud roar and propels you ahead with ease. I'm quite surprised to get this sort of difference from just a plastic tube and conical filter. For ~$250, this performance mod can't be beat.Another reason I was surprised at the performance was that the kit pretty much consists of a straight plastic tube, a conical filter, and a plastic divider with some rubber tubing around the edges. With my TRD intake, the filter was enclosed in a box, preventing any hot engine air from entering. The K&N unit doesn't seem too concerned with blocking out engine bay air, especially considering the 1/2" gap between the filter tube and the divider. It seems like it would be easy for warm engine bay air to find its way into the engine. But it still outperforms my TRD unit. I'm guessing that K&N's rationale was that if the engine needs air, it's better to pull in warm engine bay air than none at all. There's a couple things I don't like about the kit... but they aren't enough of a problem to dock a star from the product. The first one is that the supplied hose clamp that you put around the saddle bracket is too small. The bracket is pretty damn wide, and you need to somehow fit this hose clamp around the saddle bracket and close it around the intake tube. Their hose clamp was far too small for this. Luckily, I had some extras laying around and I found one that fit.The other thing I don't like is the choice of screws that are used for mounting the MAF sensor to the tube. They aren't philips, torx, or flathead... but instead need to be fastened by a small allen wrench, which is not supplied. After hunting around for awhile I could find one, but it just seems to make things unnecessarily difficult. The OEM screws are philips, and it would be nice if these were too.The instructions were otherwise fairly easy to follow. I was expecting hell after reading some reviews here and on other sites, but they are pretty decent. I would have liked to be given torque specs on the different bolts... but no one seems to follow torque specs anyway so it's not a big deal.I'd also recommend having some cable ties laying around to secure some of the wires and tubing. They are secured to your factory air box using plastic tabs, but when you remove that box to install this kit, they are left hanging. They don't have enough play to get tangled in anything or otherwise cause trouble, but I just felt better after securing them to something, that's all. While you have your hood open it makes sense to secure them to something while you're at it.All-in-all, for less than $250, this is a MUST have. It's hard to believe how much of a difference a single mod can make to your vehicle... especially one priced like this. I've head some people complain about the engine noise, but the engine sounds exactly the same if you are driving normally. Once you get up around 3k rpm, it'll really roar... but in normal city and highway driving, you aren't hitting 3k rpm so it's not a big deal. If you are, you're just wasting gas money. Stop it.
