On the mini lathe, the belt drive ensures that expensive parts don't break from overloads.
On the mini mill, the easy-to-replace intermediate gear on top of the headstock is still plastic. This helps to ensure that you don't break expensive and hard to replace parts.
The smaller in this set is smaller of the two transmission gears. It has 12 Teeth on one end and 20 teeth on the other.
The larger of the two is the larger of the two transmission gears. It has 21 Teeth on one end and 29 teeth on the other.

Replaced both gears, one of which had shattered. Turns more freely. Switches gears from high to low smother. Just better product that was originally plastic. Sounds more like a lathe than an electric drill.

Easy-ish to install. Works well. Much stronger than the plastic gears. What were they thinking?

I own a Harbor Freight mini metal lathe and after many years of use I managed to strip those notorious nylon transmission gears. I bought these replacements hoping I could talk a proper mechanic into installing them. But to no avail. So I undertook the task of doing it myself. Armed with several videos online showing how and a modest collection of common hand tools I completed the task in under 4hrs. A concentricity gauge showed I did the job right. I now own a fully functional and more robust lathe. Note: These are metal and require regular maintenance (greasing) so do consider drilling grease ports in the gearbox housing.

The lathe works way better and stronger. It gets louder so make sure to put greese in the gears . Very good machined items. Best part to maje the lathe work hard
