The Mitutoyo 103 series outside micrometer has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, and a ratchet-stop mechanism for uniform pressure during adjustment. The micrometer’s frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.001”, with a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The spindle and anvil have flat measuring faces and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position.

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

Great OD Mike, I work with this tool every day at work and wanted my own. Only "issue" it shows bluish color but delivered twice now in silver color. I will not try a third time as I am sure they will just send another silver one. So, seems to work just as the blue and therefore no real complains other than I really wanted the blue.

Mitutoyo really does make the absolute best micrometers you can buy, hands down. This is a great tool, extremely accurate and smooth with great repeatability.

I was in need of a new set of micrometers for work. I work in a machine shop and use them on a daily basis. Mitutoyo is my go to for all my tools. I know that when I buy something from Mitutoyo that it's going to work and last a long time. While I've only had them for about a month now, they've done nothing other than what they're supposed to do. I'd definitely recommend these to anyone in need of a quality micrometer. The only thing left to test is how long it's going to last.

Excellent. I would prefer that the locking latch be metal vice plastic. This is a very small concern. Otherwise a world-class item at a very good price.
