This is a very nice set of anvils. They are expensive because they also come certified and you can be assured that when you use them, you are getting reliable readings. For those who are only using instruments like this for hobby use, yes there are probably more affordable products out there that would be better suited for less rigorous work. However, if this is what you do professionally, than you can't bet the quality of your work and your job security on bargain deals. Most professional machinist know that, and also know that even a beginner will make the money back in a week in exchange for years or use out of these instruments. My shop has many Mitutoyo tools of various types running round and all work very well, hold up to daily use, and assure excellent parts time after time. As a side note, I didn't actually buy the anvil set itself, I bought the anvil set along with a 0-1" mitutoyo thread mic, but it is exactly the same set of 6 from 3.5 to 80 TPI, you just get a little more bang for your buck that way.
