I have had OXO wine openers in the past that I loved but I was not happy with this one and will not be ordering them anymore. The knife kept swinging open as it was loose, and the blade was dull. Overall it did not have the same quality look & feel nor work as well as the two OXO I've used in the past.

A small part controlling the corkscrew itself just broke, after about 5 years of use. (Did I really drink that many bottles? I don't thinks so!)

This is my absolute favorite corkscrew. I live in a small apartment having such a compact corkscrew but despite how compact it is its also quite weighty which I like. My last Oxo good grips corkscrew was stolen by a former roommate and I couldn't repurchase fast enough!

I could never get the hang of this gadget and I am a handy person. It has broken corks and pinched my fingers....looking for something better.

I've used a fancy lever corskrew at home for years because I thought they provided the best leverage and ease-of-use, but the screw on my expensive opener keeps unscrewing itself off when opening very tight corks.I travel a lot and carry a simple waiter's corkscrew with me because they're small and fairly easy to use too because they also have good leverage. Well one day I couldn't find my travel opener so shopped for a replacement. The thing is, you can't carry an opener on a plane if it has a knife foil cutter, so I looked long and hard for one with an alternative. (My old one had lost its knife so was easy to travel with, and I just cut the foil with the screw tip.)The Good Grips 31681 has a wonderful and safe 2-wheel foil cutter that passes airport security, and actually works beautifully! Just run the cutters around the bottle and the foil is off. (Update 4/21/11: I see they have changed the model here and it now has a traditional knife. That's not the one I reviewed)The next great thing about this opener is the ergonomic rubber casing that is SO comfortable when removing the cork. But the very BEST thing about this opener is how effortlessly the corks come out of the bottles! For instance, I couldn't get one of those new imitation corks out with my lever opener because the screw wouldn't grab the cork and would just unscrew itself from the opener instead- drove me crazy! I tried this opener on it expecting to really fight the cork when pulling it out- instead it slid out like butter! I was amazed. Now It's my primary home openener and I'm buying another one to travel with, and one for everyone in my family!BUY IT!!!!!

I've had this for a year and can report it's a very good, no nonsense cork puller. It's not as fancy as the rabbit pullers but then this one is good for everyday use or to throw into the picnic carrier or shaving kit for a trip away.It does not leave cork parts in the wine. Requires some skill / patience / strength, however. The foil cutter is not the traditional knife blade but two sharp scoring edges. It works about 80% of the time (OXO: I think the edges should be sharper or bigger).Good value and recommended.

The foil cutter is awkward to use: While you circle the top of the bottle, you must press the two little wheels against the foil. There is no option but to cut the foil near the top (I like to cut it below the lip), so I use a regular knife to cut the foil rather than use the OXO.The corkscrew itself is excellent: It has a very sharp point, and screws in easily. The spirals wide enough to grip well into the cork, providing a good grip even in old corks. The lever which rests against the bottle is positioned and sized just right (the lever does not touch the cork, nor does it slide off the bottle). The grip has the typical OXO feel of firmness and softness, which I like. The geometry provides good leverage and easily extracts the more recalcitrant corks. As with any waiter's helper style corkscrew, it takes care and practice to insert the screw down the middle of the cork.Unfortunately, after a year of service, one of the small parts in the OXO broke, and now the screw and lever flop around loosely, so I can't use it anymore.
