Your cart is empty.These Petoskey stones can range from 1 3/4'' to 2 1/4'' in size and are polished on one side and rough tumbled on the other side. Photos are representative only. Each piece is unique. *Petoskey Stone* This interesting stone is a variety of Calcite. It was formed by the fossilization of ancient coral, Hexagonaria. The coral lived in shallow waters and today's fossil often includes ancient silt and mud. Petoskey Stones are found on many beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron, as well as in rock quarries from Travers City to Alpena. The honeycomb patterned stone has a hardness from 4 to 5 and is the official Michigan State Stone.

I always wanted to replace the Petoskey stone I lost during a move! I did not know what to expect with this stone. It is OK. The size description is accurate, but the stone appeared dull. The detail is nice, so that is what earned it four stars. The stone did have a fracture that was filled. I took off one star for the price and fracture! But it will have a special place on my mantle.

I bought three polished Petoskey Stones and found that they were inconsistent in quality. A couple were inferior, mostly black, barely showing any Hexagonaria. This was disappointing since the stones were intended as exemplary souvenir gifts for a few visitors to Michigan to show off our State Stone. I feel like the source "dumped" inferior specimens. They were well polished but hardly representative of these beautiful fossil stones.

Loved it! It came in a cute bag with an explanation of the stone. Since this is the MI official stone, My daughter gave this as a gift to her host family when she went to Japan. She said the family loved the gift.
