A saxophone "light leak detector". I had read about them, but had never seen one, or even hoped to own one, since I got serious about playing the sax after high school. It's as old as the invention of the light bulb for finding air leaks in key valves. Popular with some sax techs, and maybe mechanically inclined players like me. This is a modern incarnation of the idea: a string of LEDs connected to a power cord with an on/off switch, and enough cord to allow the LED strip to make it down to the bottom of my soprano, alto, and tenor saxes. I don't know if it's long enough to service a baritone sax. Although the manufacturer specifies the device can be used with a flute, I don’t have a flute to test it with.If you play one, you know saxes are a "plumber's nightmare", with a zillion things to go out of alignment. One of the things that can go out is the seal between a keypad and the sax body. If that seal isn't good, the sax is much less playable, or unplayable. But, without this gadget, it's very difficult to know exactly what the problem is. With this gadget, you go into a darkened room with your sax (!), shove the light strip down the body of the sax so the light from the LED strip is gushing out from between the bads and the holes in the body. Now press down all the keys with the same pressure you would if you were playing the instrument. Look to see if there's any light leaking out. If there is, you've found the problem, or one of them, anyway. Take it from there. To power this gadget, you plug it into a USB type A female receptacle or power brick. You must supply the power brick or power source. None is included. I measured the device consuming 170 milliamps at 5.2 volts. The build quality is decent. The device seems a bit fragile, but it’s easily folded up, stuffed in the baggie it’s shipped in, and placed in my sax case. The inline power switch and ability to use USB power (or power pack!) is an added convenience, though not absolutely necessary.

Simple and well put together. This is one of those musical instrument tools I've wanted, but never got around to getting before. It tests instruments (an alto saxophone in my case) for light leaks. In the photos, I've showed how it works. Nothing to it, but an essential tool. Initially, I thought it was too short (the lit portion), but it works fine -- at least for an alto. This is well made with an on/off switch. For power, it uses a USB plus. Not an issue, but not ideal. In the photos, the alto sax I'm using was overhauled just a couple of months ago so it's tight as a a drum.
