OK, I admit I am a dummy. After research, I discovered this paddle is meant to be the frame for you to add the sponge (glue it on) yourself. The advantage of this style of paddle is that you can mount different types of sponge (thickness/pips in or out), and replace as necessary. Still, the advertising should be a little more clear and maybe make it more evident that a variety of different sponge surfaces are able to be purchased?!

Great blade, slower than Viscaria but has great control and sweet spot. Works great with Dignics 09c. Price was also excellent. Might buy again.
