The Journey to Perfecting Heavy-Duty Stud Shoes for 2x Studs and DOUBLE 2x Studs

For years, we’ve specialized in metal product development, building a loyal customer base along the way. One day, an old friend named Eric reached out to us with a pressing issue. He had been drilling and notching wood studs to accommodate plumbing, heating, and other pipes, reinforcing them with conventional nail plates. However, after his work was inspected, he was informed that his methods didn’t meet code requirements. The protection plates he used were inadequate, posing risks to the safety of the building.

Eric asked if we had any solutions to address his concerns. Inspired by his email, our R&D team dove into the IBC and IRC code standards to better understand the requirements. We sketched out ideas for a new product that could offer better reinforcement. However, our first batch revealed sharp edges and burrs around the holes, which not only posed a danger to hands but also to the plumbing and electrical wiring.

Working closely with our shop technicians, we brainstormed solutions. After five rounds of adjustmentstweaking machine settings, cutting speeds, and gas mixtures—we finally produced a second batch that met our standards and was installed on wood studs.

After a week, we noticed that the edges of our stud shoes began to rust, compromising both aesthetics and safety. Determined to improve, we explored various surface treatments and ultimately settled on a galvanized finish. The result? Heavy-duty, galvanized stud shoes that we sent to Eric for testing.

Over a month later, Eric excitedly informed us that his project passed inspection with flying colors. He recommended our product to friends in need, expressing a desire for us to produce them in bulk to enhance wood stud support while protecting pipes and wiring.

Thanks to Eric and his neighbors’ enthusiastic support, we proudly introduced Stud Shoes for 2x Studs. We hope our product can help you reinforce your wood studs and make your projects safer and more efficient.

Since launching the Stud Shoes for 2x Studs, we've received overwhelming praise from customers who've shared how our product has helped them solve real-world issues. Many have even recommended we expand our product line to cater to Double 2x Studs as well. We're excited to announce that the Stud Shoes for Double 2x Studs are now available! You can choose the right product based on your specific needs.

I had already made my acquaintance with the 2x4 stud shoes and they were excellent. These double-wide versions are also excellent quality. The 16 gauge is a game changer it would seem - these are solid and unbending, they have perfect right angled plates and non-opposing holes for nails/#8 screws. And a massive plus is they actually fit two 2x4's with precision, no unwanted space and bent brackets. As with their smaller sibling I simply cannot find this kind of quality at the major hardware stores. For clear comparison I've attached a pic of the sub-standard offering at all of them!Highly recommend

The Stud Shoes are a solid solution for protecting structural integrity when routing pipes through double 2x studs. Made from 16-gauge galvanized steel, they feel very sturdy and durable. The increased height (6.25") and width (3") offer excellent coverage, and they accommodate pipes up to 2 3/8" OD with no issue. They’re thicker and taller than many other options on the market, which adds peace of mind during framing and inspection. Easy to install with pre-drilled holes for nails or screws. The only reason for 4 stars is that they come individually, and it would be great to have a bulk-pack option for larger jobs. Otherwise, a dependable product that does exactly what it promises—protects pipes and complies with code.

The "Upvont" branded Double Stud Shoe protectors are well made and more than durable enough for their intended use. The guage of metal is about the same as other metal protector plates I have used in the past, so it will not affect drywall or other wall board installation. I appreciate that the edges were not "sharp" to the touch as some other products I have had to handle in the past.I think my only minor issue is that there is not some form of smaller additional smaller meta plate to put on the rear side of the wooden studs if necessary. However, you can sort of double these up back to back in certain scenarios.Overall, I am pleased with this set and have already put several to use in protecting the sink drain lines for a wet bar rough-in I currently working on as part of a basement renovation. They are similar to Simpson branded products in my local home improvement store and the price is competitive on a per unit basis as the Double wide plates are generally quite expensive in the stores. At the time I acquired these the original listing price was $69.99 which I feel is reasonable for an 8 pack. These are certainly worth considering in my opinion.

I picked these up for an upcoming basement renovation and was able to compare the quality between it and the Simpson brand stud shoe bought at a hardware store. The differences are basically imperceptible; the metal gauge is the same, the weight is about the same, and overall quality is essentially identical to the big brand. The edges of the metal aren't sharp, and as long as the galvanized steel is of reasonable quality these should be a good choice if you need a bunch of stud shoes to reinforce your wood studs.

...easily to a support beam. We used them on double 2x4 supports in our rebuilt plant growing area that was crushed when a tree came down during a tropical storm. We used two per 8 foot span and ran a heavy bolt through the middle, pulling the two 2x4 studs together tightly. Worked well.
