It is stainless, but a poor grade Stainless. Will rust if left long enough in water, mostly on the sharp grip edges (see photo). These are at least as strong as Harbor Freight pliers. They will not break cracking shells and nuts like other nut crackers I purchased from Amazon. I like the way they are joined cleanly with no visible nut or rivet. They might not be high quality stainless steel and they rust a little, but they get the job done and at a fair price!

Unlike most of what is out there, these are not plated zinc that folds when you need them most! A magnet sticks, but like most stainless they are just fine for cracking hard nuts and lobster shells!
