This thing has amazing bass with a good high end, although it is too much of a ring for my taste. I put a moongel on it and it sounds tight and loud. I'm not sure why these things aren't more popular, the bass tone beats every djembe any day of the week, with the same slap tone you get from smaller djembes. It literally fills any room with sound! It is weird to play with the strap on, so I got a Meinl Steely II djembe stand and leaned it in between the prongs so you can play it sitting down. It works great and you can hit it pretty hard without it moving. There is no stand that I know of that is made for this, so you have to improvise.

I purchased this drum after some research on the internet and could not be more happy! This drum has some really rich tones and deep bass notes. I typically play a doumbek but find myself drawn to djembes (African) and now this klong yao (Thai tribal drum) on occasion when looking for a new sound for music. The overall quality of this drum is outstanding with few exceptions. The strap ring on the body of the drum bent after carrying it a few times but that is easily rectified with a pair of pliers. Also, the Toca badge on the body of the drum had three screws securing it to the drum. After playing it for a few months, two of the three are gone. The badge is glued so there is no threat in loosing it but the holes need something in them...The head is of good quality and the fiberglass body is very durable. I find that when I play this harder than usual, I need to steady the bottom of the body as it will add a rattling vibrato to the tone, which to me is unacceptable when playing during performances. The drum came fairly in tune but not enough to be a game changer and require tightening of the head. All in all, this is great drum and of decent build quality. I highly recommend this drum to anyone looking for the unusual or a great sound!
