Not quite heavy enough, but easy to add weight

I can't believe the value here for these crab snares. These are made in the USA and they are as good as you can find anywhere. But they even come with bait. Dried squid. Squid is a very popular bait for crabbing but it's expensive. These crab snares come with two extra snares in each box, so if you break one or two, you can replace it. The cages are very rigid and heavy duty. They are corrosion resistant with thick black paint. They're not chicken wire, this is really heavy duty stuff. It adds to the weight of the cage. There's also a built-in weight that is the perfect size for bays and small currents. The hinge on the crab snare is high quality and there's also a locking heavy duty swivel. I'm very impressed with these crab snares. Additional weight can be added if you're going to do any surf crabbing which I do. I usually have to put in a little more weight than this one provides but other than that these are perfect for bays and even some light surf. These snares are designed to land flat on their back with the weight down and the snares in the air so the crab gets its legs entangled and then when you pull your line, it'll pull the snare tight on one of the crab's legs. This makes crabbing fun like fishing. You're going to need a good fishing rod, heavy test line and a solid reel because there's a lot of pressure that goes on with these snares when you have some crab hooked on them. These are specifically made for Dungeness crab because they're strong enough to pull in several crab at once. Many of the ones you might see online are not heavy duty enough to pull in Dungeness crab. This is a great value because you get three of these with the bait. And in some tackle stores one of these types might cost what these are for three.

Wasn't really what I expected. I had the idea of casting it into the surf. It's almost too heavy to cast. After it was out in the surf, it just kept getting rolled around making bird nests of the line.I guess dropping it into the water or light casting from a dock was probably what is was made for.

I was curious to see if these would work better than simple "chicken & net" crabbing that's traditionally here on the Texas coast. YouTube videos seemed to make these look like awesome crabbing tools, but between the included squid bait versus chicken legs, the chicken got all the crab love and the squid was completely ignored. As far as the snaring action goes, I didn't have the recommended type of rod set up for proper use, but since I was just dropping these off a bulwark in shallow water, I figured trying them to a piece of PVC pipe would still give me enough of a quick retrieve. I could feel crabs tubing on the cage, but I was only able to snare one and it was too small to keep. Meanwhile, my chicken leg and net were getting food. The cages and cords themselves feel very tough and durable. They should withstand several years of ocean abuse. Loading the cages was easy. It came with several replacement snare lines, which is nice. If you eventually break all those you can use the line from weedwackers. When I switched from the squid to chicken, crabs had a hard time stealing my bait.On the more rugged and wild east and west coasts, these are probably very good for crabbing, but here in the warm, mellow waters of Texas, they are more complicated and finicky than needed.

These are easy to use. They are strong. Have caught a lot of crabs with these snares. They come with extra loops to replace any worn out ones. We have lost some when they get caught on sharp rocks and the line is cut or when they are not tied onto the line correctly and the go flying when casting. AirFly is the only ones I use and have been using them for 3 years.
