Does NOT fit Volvo SX-A outdrive. The bolt pattern on the plate is wrong. After a second attempt I learned i could improvise by turning the plate on an angle. Not perfect but it did work.

I used this tool on my Volvo SX-M outdrive. I was able to check engine/outdrive alignment, gimbal bearing remove & install, and oil seal install. Removing the oil seal uses a slide hammer puller, but mine was stuck because previous owner put super glue on it, so I ended up using the old “screw driver and hammer method”. This was my first time doing all of these things, but I watched the YT videos a couple times. Every boat owner should know these things, and become comfortable removing and inspecting their outdrive every year. One SX-M out-drive is $11k, I want to take personal care of it. Knowing that the engine is aligned, the bearing is lubed, the U-Joints lubed, the Bellows good, and the gear oil fresh, and the outdrive properly installed is peace of mind. The part where I had to drill that solid metal bar “Alignment Tool” was scary, but I used a Bosch cobalt drill bit and added mineral oil regularly to keep the heat to a minimum, running no longer that 10 seconds, then cool off. A magnet helped me collect metal shavings. To mark the drill spot, I used the YT video method of placing an O-Ring. I used the gimbal bearing installer disc to help keep my drill angle perpendicular to the metal bar, while the bar was held by a vise. This all sounds like a lot of work, but it really is worth doing. Highly recommend this tool!

This product worked amazing. On a bravo one outdrive, in the Marina parking lot hour and a half start to finish including setting up the 10‘ x 10‘ pop-up. Can’t say enough good things about this product.

I would rate it a five for quality, but because there was virtually nothing included as far as setting up the tool, I gave it four stars. The parts are made from quality materials but there were no directions as to setting up the tool. Luckily I found a you tube video from someone who had purchased a similar item, with instruction on how to set up the tool. It requires measuring the depth of the output shaft to the surface of your installed gimbal bearing. Then you have to mark and drill a hole through the center of the installation tool shaft assembly, which is time consuming and requires some precision drilling to bring it all together. Needless to say, it worked flawlessly to remove my old gimbal bearing and install a new one on my Alpha One, Gen 2 Mercruiser drive.

This item needs some instructions and probably a full disclaimer on the product page. You need to carefully measure the depth of the old bearing before you remove it. If you don’t have access to a machine shop you will have a very hard time boring the necessary hole to use it for installation. This is the kind of information that should be in bold print on the product page.
