Constant nuisance, expensive to maintain, do not buy this printer.* holds little paper* scan button doesn't work, you need to use the app. Basically need a week long training for this printer to use it.* installing the app is a pain. I uninstalled it from my PC because the pop ups were so intrusive and could not be switched off.* by far the slowest printer I ever had the misfortune of owning. I had bubble jet printers in the 90s which were multiple times faster.* I was never able to get the fax to work. I tried many times - the fax button does nothing and going through the app never worked. Again, I refuse to engage in hour and hours of training for a feature where there is a button and it won't work* Cannot perform print nor copy in black f a color ink is low.* Entering the wifi password is only possible on the panel - it takes about 10 s econds per letter and is unlikely to work unless you try multiple times. Infuriating. If you appreciate quality of life and having a utility in your house for something mundane that was solved in the 1980s, do not buy this printer. When it decides to work, it will harass you with every job and when it doesn't work, you will lose hours of your precious time convincing it to do what you bought it for. I truly hate this device.

[UPDATE]I've had this printer for almost six months now. I'm still using the ink cartridges that came with the printer. Full disclosure: I don't print that often, but I appreciate one feature most users have complained about: Every day around 11 AM, the printer turns itself on and performs a nozzle cleanup. I think that has really helped for the inks to not dry out on me, like is usually the case with most printers when used rarely.[END OF UPDATE]I know reviews based on first impressions aren't that great, but given how bad my experience with my previous all-in-one printer was, it's too hard not to notice the contrast now.Setting up the Brother MFC-J480DW took a bit longer than setting up my previous AIO (HP Envy 5055), but this was mostly because this Brother printer uses four ink cartridges instead of two, and because it has tactile buttons instead of the touchscreen of the HP printer. Having tactile buttons to press motivated me to run the Wi-Fi setup from the printer itself, instead of relying on a mobile app for Wi-Fi setup. But if setting up the hardware took some extra time, setting up the software took almost no time at all. This is because I didn't download any software from Brother's website, nor did I use the included installation CD. I avoided unnecessary bloatware and just let Windows 10 detect the printer and install its drivers. Printing works fine, as does scanning via both the flatbed and document feeder. Note that when using the document feeder, you need to insert the paper all in; it isn't very intuitive how deep you need to insert the paper into the feeder, but once you get the hang of it, works like a charm. The MFC-J480DW also works fine on macOS High Sierra, though macOS didn't detect the printer on its own, I had to add it manually. But again, I just used the first-party drivers from macOS, no unnecessary bloatware there either. While I haven't used the printer on Android, I know both my Galaxy Tab S2 (Android 7.0) and my Nokia 6.1 (Android 8.1) both recognized the printer. I don't know yet how to print from an iPad, but this printer supports AirPrint, so that shouldn't be a problem.Printouts look nice. The printer is quite slow, but nothing out of what I expect from its price point. As for the ink yield, it's too early to tell. I did see that when I'm about to print a document, under "Printer Properties" there is an option to print with just black instead of color. This should take care of the common complaint that the printer refuses to print black documents when one of the color cartridges has run out. We shall see, and I'll update this section of the review when that time comes. One thing I wasn't expecting is that this printer also has a built-in fax. I won't use it, but it's interesting to know it is there, especially since I thought the fax support was the differentiating feature between the J480DW and the slightly more expensive J485DW. Another interesting detail is how Brother hid the USB port underneath the scanner's flatbed. I guess they really want you to use the printer wirelessly, but if you do want to connect it via USB, you can lift the flatbed to find the USB port, and there's a cable management hole to route the USB cable to the back of the printer.

It came without 48 hours! Instructs to get everything set up was easy to follow, it just took more time that expected. I had one minor paper jam still since using this print and I’m happy with the quality and reliability. I have a small home office and do a low volume of printing so this works great for my purposes.

I've had Canon, HP, and other printers and have never been as pleased as I am with this Brother model. As a casual home user, this checks all the boxes for me. The print cartridges are less expensive. The printer sound is quiet. The warm up time is minimal. The installation was fairly easy. The footprint is smaller than most. The digital readout is clear and helpful. We've had this printer for a couple of months now and have been very happy with it. Setting it up for use with my wireless desk top computer was fairly easy, and the I found the instructions easy to follow. It took about 1/2 hour, and I have had no connectivity problems. It sits on a small stand on wheels beside my large computer desk, and I haven't noticed any vibration of the cart when printing.Although the casing is plastic, it seems sturdy enough to withstand normal use. The size is about 16" wide by 14" deep by 6 1/2" high, and you don't need extra room on the sides for access. The paper supply, ink cartridge replacement, and paper output are all on the front. The cartridges are contained in a box on the lower right of the front panel and are easy to replace. It uses 4 separate cartridges for black/yellow/cyan/magenta, and the other colors keep working if one runs out.I haven't used the Fax or Scan capabilities, but it works fine for printing and copying. The display tilts out for easier reading. The buttons are well marked and easy to understand, and the digital readout provides instructions in language that's pretty easy to follow. I keep the printer turned off between uses, and when I turn it back on, it takes only about 10 seconds before it's ready to print - no long warmup routine. I haven't had any paper jams. So I can't comment on how easily they can be fixed.Overall I think is the best printer I've ever owned, and I feel like I finally found a printer that meets all my needs for a reasonable price.Update 2017: I have had this printer for about 1 1/2 years now, and I am still as pleased as when I first purchased it. I occasionally print out a 2-sided newsletter for our community. With the previous HP OfficeJet Pro, I would have to print 10 copies at a time to prevent paper jams. With this Brother, I can print all 73 copies at one time, with no paper jams. It prints right down to the last sheet in the tray without a problem. To do the 2-sided pages, I print one side first. Then I reload the tray with the printed pages (print side up and page top in first), and print the second side. It takes me less than 5 minutes to print 73 pages. I haven't counted, but I estimate that I get about 200 pages per print cartridge. No problem if you have to change the ink cartridge in the middle of a project because there are no test pages printed out. It just resumes the printing as soon as the new cartridge is in place. I would still highly recommend this printer for home users.
