I hand knit and crochet and wasn't sure about a mechanical one. It was totally fun to work on! The kit comes complete with not only yarn and a large crochet hook but patterns to continue making them over and over

This kit comes with a number of interesting things, including patterns for twisted cord shapes, soft but thick wire for shaping, wire cutters, odds and ends, but also the coolest crochet hook I’ve seen. It has a needle style eye on the end that makes threading the cord maker easier. It came with a bunch of yarn of the style that usually comes with amagurumi kits. I set that aside for now and pulled out a skein of cheap red heart to test with since it’s not my favorite. At first glance I was a little intimidated by the knitting machine, but I got it clamped in place and followed the directions. Once I got started I realized it really wasn’t that hard though as the directions are well written. As a note, the motor is on the weaker side, so while you want the loose end tensioned once it’s threaded through, the feeder end does best if it’s really loose. Keep an eye on yarn placement though, with it loose it sometimes tried to wrap around the end of the cord once the cord got long enough. A better placement of the yarn skein probably would have helped avoid that. If it doesn’t want to run, make sure there’s no tension on the feeder yarn, and if needed tap it off and back on. Once I got a feel for it, things started flowing smoothly and you can see my example red heart yarn cord in the photo. The finished cord is stretchy and stiff and my cats go nuts over it. Probably the most complicated part of the whole thing is finishing it but there’s a QR code for a video how-to.On the whole I’m happy with it, but if it’s for a kid it needs to be a kid who can treat things gently.

As I learn to use it, it has been easy for me to untangle without messing up the pins. I have used it with size 1 and size 4 yarn. The cord is about the same width, but the size 1 has a lot more stretch. I also tried T-shirt yarn. That did not work. Overall it's a very fun piece to add variety to yarn projects.

I've recently been making a lot of wearable hoodies, and have found the process of creating the drawstrings for the hood to be tedious and a lot of work. This kit comes with a lot, I didn't read a lot of the information ahead of getting this item I was more excited about the possibility of making icords for my hoodies.Within the box is the actual machine, a crochet hook tapestry needle combination, 9 small skeins of yarn, two rolls of aluminum wire, rubber tips, four replacement needles for the machine, a set of needle nose pliers, two weights for the assistance of keeping tension on the knitting machine, the electric cord for the machine itself, and a set of patterns for the creation of some projects in a variety of shapes. The yarn that it comes with is super soft and feels like it can really create some beautiful projects. The templates are adorable, I wasn't quite sure what to make of them but they do include some example videos on the posting for this project. The instruction booklet is pretty neat and in color, all though each section of language is probably only 12 pages long. With that being said it appears that there are also some videos if you need any extra help on the project as well.

I have been so curious about those little animals and shapes and cords that I see everywhere and wondered how people were making them. I realize this is not the only way to make them but was really intrigued by the idea of a little machine that might help me learn the skill. I was intimidated by the entire process and the machine itself so much so that I took it out of the box and had everything out and then just put it all away again, several times. I finally sat down and read through the very well written instructions and watched a few of the videos and decided it was going to be just fine...and it was. I'm still a complete novice but totally feel like I can make something or many things now that I have played with it more. I definitely recommend watching some of the videos if you are a complete beginner like I am, they help.Overall though, the kit is kind of amazing. It comes wtih so much and makes it really easy to learn the craft. I think this will be fun for a long time as I learn new things I can do with it all. For the price, you definitely get quite a lot and it seems like a good value to me. I'm excited to play with it more.

This was almost returned. The hooks weren't seated properly, (I fixed it) the yarn smells horrible and splits. When I finally got it working with a better yarn it worked fine. The directions leave much to be desired. QR codes aren't my thing. A website address would have been better, or a link to a comprehensive video instead of youtube shorts. However, once glitches were solved on a brand new product, it does work fine. I-cord was made very, very quickly so I'll be keeping it.
