I've used a different kind of chestnut opener before that was more handheld.This one has a base so you put the chestnut in it and press the lever down to create a opening for the chestnut so when you cook it it can expand correctly and not blow up such as if you cook chestnuts in the microwave.You always have to open them up beforehand so the steam can escape normally and not allow the chestnut to explode.This unit works well with opening the chestnut. I think we'll leave it on the kitchen countertop during chestnut season in October and November.This worked well and I think it's reasonably priced around $15.I like it.
