I never needed a tire tread depth tool relying on penny and quarter methods and indicator bars in the past. That changed after potholes damaged two tires within a year. The first incident took out a front tire, so I replaced them both despite have plenty of tread depth left on the other front tire. Recently, a rear tire on the same side separated, likely from the same pothole. I opted for a matching used tire this time but needed an accurate tool to measure tread depth. This tool was excellent; large display, snug measuring pin, and included valve caps as a nice bonus. The money saved buying a used tire and this tool was about 47% compared to a new tire for getting 8/32 of matching tread depth on the lightly used tire.

Reliable, durable, very accurate, works better and stronger than my coworkers Mac Tools gauge.

I've been using a $5 manual tread depth gauge for years with good results. My aging eyes coupled with the gadget lover in me resulted in the purchase of this digital gauge. Somehow Amazon's AI knew I wouldn't be able to resist when a suggestion popped up while I was shopping for something else. The unit powered up and was instantly ready to go. I measured 3 places (inside, middle, outside) on all 4 tires of both of our vehicles. I reset and zeroed the gauge after every reading. Given the sensitivity of the gauge, you need to be careful as to how you reset the gauge after taking a reading. I was resetting on the garage floor with a variance of about .02". Part of this is likely the variation in the concrete and dirt on the floor. The gauge has a zero button, which zeroes the gauge so you can start each reading with .000". I don't have any instruments to test the accuracy of this gauge; however, I'm more interested in picking up differential wear on my tires. I believe this gauge is sufficiently accurate and repeatable to meet my needs. I have no regrets spending less than $20 to make my life a little easier.

I am an automotive technician and I use this everyday. It has been great so far, and it's very accurate and easy to read. It is durable and will last a long time if taken care of.

This gauge is great. Does exactly what I need and it comes in orange, I try to get orange tools because it's less likely to walk away at my shop. One of the things I like about this gauge compared to similar I've used, I don't have to turn it on before measuring. I just put it against the tire and push the tip down and it comes right to life with a measurement and it stays on the measurement style it was on when it was turned off. So I don't have to hit a lot of buttons to get my measurement, because as a flat rate tech time is money. It feels well made, it a has heft to it compared to other gauges I've seen, most of which are all plastic. This has a metal back plate and measuring tip others not so much. It'd cool if they had even more color choices in addition to the 3 they currently offer, that way if my co-workers decide to get one they can color coordinate with their tool boxes. Lol

This is a handy little device. It appears to be accurate. It's easier to read compared to traditional tread depth gauges. It's held up to professional shop use so far. You have the option of measuring in thousandths, and in mm for other depth measurements. The only drawbacks would be the bulk of the gauge and no back light. Neither have been major issues. The digital display makes reading the depth quicker than other instruments. I would note that you will have to zero it out against a flat surface before use so that you are getting true readings. Would definitely recommend to DIYers and Professionals alike.
