My Nikon speedlight broke after I dropped it 7 years of good use. I tried some generic imitations and almost ruined a wedding. As a professional wedding photographer I will never do that again. Got this Nikon speedlight and it works flawlessly.

This was a replacement item and so I am familiar with the flash and its functions. I am happy that it works and looks pretty much as if it was new.

This Nikon SB-800 Speedlight was purchased to be used with a D300 D-SLR.Although not the most powerful flashgun available on the market it's however, powerful enough and extremely well built and it's manual is very comprehensive and I'm still digesting all of it's content. As with all of today's camera/flashgun manufacturers, whose products work effortlessly together, Nikon products are no exception. You get various auto modes such as I-TTL, AA etc. depending on your camera type, together with full manual mode when desired. It comes with a case, stand, soft light diffuser, gel kit and the extra battery attachment so a fifth battery can be use which reduces it's recharge time but strangely, no batteries. I'm currently using five rechargeable 1300mAh Ni-MH AA batteries with no issue whatsoever, although as yet I haven't tried my 2700mAh batteries in it. Some people seem to have problems with the higher capacity Ni-MH batteries in various flashguns. It can be attached directly to the camera's accessory/hot shoe with the light bounced off a wall or ceiling. It can be also be used remotely when set as a slave unit and triggered by the optional SU-800 commander or another SB-800 set as the master. It's so versatile that it can be triggered optically by the D300's built-in flashgun (or any other third party camera/flashgun combination including compact cameras with a built-in flash - I've tried this out with my Olympus Mju 1030 SW so I know that it works!). This can provide extra valuable direct or bounced light from an umbrella or wall etc..There's the usual multi-channel facility to prevent interference from other Nikon camera/flashgun combo's setting off your equipment in error.I'm finding the menu system fairly easy to use (with manual in hand to keep me right, LOL) but I've still got a lot of ground to cover and when I can afford more flashguns I'll be working on Nikon's Creative Light System thingy! All in all an excellent addition to my photographic equipment and I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

This unit is the fullest featured strobe I've had for a camera. Powerful output will supply enough light for most enthusiasts and works nicely in combination with other flash units, even if they're not Nikon CLS compatible. I sync a 400WS studio monolight from the SB-800 as my camera does not have a PC Sync connector and this works seamlessly--even if I only want the monolight to fire. In true NIkon fashion, this flash will do everything for you or allow you to manually control everything down to 1/128th power. Also works very nicely with the Nikon SC-29 off camera cable which includes focusing lamps on the hot-shoe connector so that your camera can focus effectively in low light. I use the SC-29 to keep the flash off of the camera 99% of the time and it allows me to hold the SB-800 behind a diffusion screen with one hand while I shoot with the other--amazing effect for a small flash like this. Recharges quickly and uses power judiciously so that batteries last longer than in other flash units (through a combination of iTTL metering and zoom capability). You won't be disappointed with the SB-800.

Very nice flash. I have had it for about 1 week and have tested it indoors and outdoors. I can immediately tell the difference in the photos - particularly indoors. Red-eye has been eliminated and the ability to bounce the light off the ceiling really gives an interesting ambience to the pictures. It is quick and the display is easy to follow.I have a Nikon D80 and the built-in flash was not giving me very good pictures in my house (we have a lot of intense can lights which give a 'spotlight' effect, but also cast harsh shadows on people's faces). Also, most of the time I am trying to take pix of two young boys (under the age of 5). Challenging lighting and subjects that will not sit still make for difficult photographs, hence the need for a DSLR and, ultimately, the Speedlight. This flash has been great - charges quickly and doesn't seem to blind the kids. That is important.Only two complaints:1) It is heavy. I'm not used to using a DSLR or external flashes, so it does take some getting used to. (I was always using a pocket sized point and shoot camera prior to upgrading)2) The manual is confusing. I tried reading it page-by-page for a few nights but that was useless. Instead I just started taking lots of pix and experimented indoors and outdoors. The flash unit itself is pretty intuitive to use and now I only refer to the manual when I have a question. I would have given this 4 stars if the manual was more helpful.Bottom line: I'd recommend it to anyone. Definitely worth the money and the improvement in my photographs.

I bought this flash to replace my aging Nikon SB-28DX speedlight which does not work well with my new Nikon D200 body. The SB-800 works very well with the D200, is solidly built and exposures are pretty much right on the money. I considered purchasing the SB-600 to save some cash but with the addition of the extra battery holder to decrease recycle times, the soft dome and filter kit as well as having a good deal more power, the SB-800 was a no brainer. I keep the extra battery attached to the side of the unit. Yes it adds bulk and weight and looks strange but faster recycle times are a very good thing. I am a photojournalist and most of the time I shoot without flash. In fact, I sometimes go two months or more without even taking the flash out of the bag. When I do need to use it, what I really want is simple and reliable operation. I get both with this flash. I will probably never use all of its features, but I appreciate the dedicated performance to my digital camera.

I recently upgraded to a Nikon D200 with the 18-200 Nikor zoom and purchased the SB800 flash to go along with the camera. As many people have stated in the D200 reviews its a great camera. What is amazing is how fantastic the flash complements the D200. I have only started to exploit the power of this flash but so far it is unbeatable. The camera, lens and flash all work together as a fantasic system. The exposure metering of the sytem is amazing. I have used it in full program mode and let the system do the thinking. The results were expectedly good. When I started pushing it more, for example putting the camera in full manual mode and letting the flash figure out how much extra light was needed it did not miss a beat. Similar amazing results were found with bounce flashes, diffused flashes, and even mulitple flashes per exposure to get a strobe effect. All had well balanced exposure. There is a bit of a learning curve with the flash. For example, you have to learn what the different modes are, how they are represented on the LCD screen, and how to adjust them. Its not difficult but it does take a bit of time to become familiar with them. All things considered, an amazing product that I am sure I will ejoy using for years to come.
