Whilst the wax resist method of decorating cloth is not unique to Southeast Asia, it is by its Malay name batik that the technique is most well known. Its examples, widely acknowledged as the most highly developed of the art form, are celebrated not only as expressions of the art and culture of the Malay World, but also as testament to its ability to assimilate the influence of other communities without forfeiting its inimitable style.
