This unusual set of tools seems to work!I realize that statement is seemingly a little contrary to the four Star rating, but I've only tried it on one reed so far, but It definitely worked on that one. As I gain more experience with this, I may change the rating.Starting with the file tool, (a small frosted glass rod) definitely takes some wood off of the reed but keeping the reed to a consistent thickness is harder then I thought it would be.It also comes with a piece of glass that is smooth on one side while the other half of the top has the same frosted texture as the file-rod. This is so if you need to sand down the bottom to make it flat enough for the mouthpiece and the reed to form a vacuum. (The flat top of the mouthpiece is called the Table.)You pretty much have to decide where you want to scrape off some wood and then hold it up to the light to see the thickness from one area to the next. Only time will tell after I reuse the reed if it helped. The cutting tool however as much more definite and it does a fine job of cutting a clean and concise edge in the bamboo. It's the same radius as the mouthpiece's front edge.Again, I had one (size 2) reed that I used this on, but it worked, so far. I use Rico reeds which aren't terribly expensive but are not cheap either (I have both 2 and 2.5 reeds).I'm new to playing a saxophone but I believe this purchase will help me save money in the long run on reeds!(Note: this only works on wooden reeds)
