I have trusted the Tekonsha prodigy brake controller for many years, and thought I would give their breakaway switch a go. It was almost a direct replacement for the breakaway switch I destroyed while chasing a shorted wire in my travel trailer brake system. I mention "almost" because the mounting hole was just slightly smaller than the breakaway switch that was being replaced. I really hope to never need to use this device, it would be a very bad day if that happened. I trust that it will do what it is supposed to IF the need ever occurs.

Order the exact one that was on my trailer. Old one cracked and was not working from the great Illinois weather over several years

It was the exact replacement for my 20+ year old one that had seized open. I noticed the wires are tinned copper instead of pure copper like on the old one. Other than that, installed very easily and should give me another 20+ years!

Guess I should have looked closer before buying. Just finishing up installing. Got as a replacement for braking system on car I tow behind RV. Product appears to be well made but has one major design flaw in my opinion. The lanyard that goes between RV and tow car is permanently attached to the breakaway switch end leaving a loop on the other end to be attached to the RV via a quick link or similar device. That means that when not towing the car, I have to coil up the lanyard and let it hang down from the grill area of the car. The car baseplate and hookup points are relatively hidden once the car is unhooked from the RV. The previous breakaway was able to be unhooked from the car end as well leaving it hidden from view. This kind of defeats the "hidden" design of everything else. I realize this is just cosmetic, but I have a nice looking car and I do not want a cable dangling from the grill when not being towed. Luckily I have a swaging tool that will allow me to cut the permanent loop attachment from the car end, put a new loop in the cable and use a quick link for that end as well. Otherwise I will have to spend time coiling the cable up, finding twist ties (I always loose the old ones) and securing to the grill of the car in a way that does not damage the grill when not towing. This may seem like a small item to some but for me would have been a deal breaker had I noticed before ordering.UPDATE: Before cutting loop off car end, I checked to see how much could be cut and still have it long enough to reach between RV and tow car. Turns out it was too short to start with. So I reused the coiled one that came with the original breakaway switch. Guess this is not intended to be used for RV car towing when you have a approx. 3 ft tow bar in between. It's probably fine for trailer hookup if switch is mounted close to the tongue of the trailer.
