So I bought this player/burner back in 2013. It is now 2018, and I'm back here on the page to buy another one, because mine finally died. So it lasted 5 years, and I burned well over 200 DVDs with it and even more CDs, and copied over 200 of my DVDs/Blu-rays and even more CDs to a back-up hard drive. So I have worn this thing out! I can't remember ever having issues with it. I'm sure there were a few over the years, but if there were, they didn't cause any permanent problems, because like I said, it's been able to accomplish everything I wanted it to do

Like many other reviewers here I was initially very frustrated with this drive. It worked fine for a few months, reading my Blu-ray movies and burning Audio CDs and Data DVDs and when I tried to burn a Blu-Ray data disc it would not recognize the disc, I tired 3 types and none worked, then the drive stopped being recognized by any of my computers (5 of them). Then I had a realization that part of my complaint about the drive was one of misidentification. It appears that ASUS in their infinite wisdom made two drive with identical design and nearly identical model numbers.SBC-06D2X-U Is a Blu Ray Combo blu ray reader only and CD/DVD burner and the SBW-06D2X-U is a Blu Ray Writer1 SBC-06D2X-U Is a Blu Ray Combo blu ray reader only and CD/DVD burner.• MAC and Windows 8 Compatible• BDXL format support• Extreme 6X Blu-ray reading speed2 SBW-06D2X-U is a Blu Ray Writer• MAC and Windows 8 Compatible• BDXL format support• Extreme 6X Blu-ray writing speedWhen I placed my order for my writer I must have looked at the writer and accidentally ordered the reader combo drive. If you look at the reviews for the ASUS Blu Ray drives you can see that there are many negative reviews, I bet many people made the same mistake I did when I purchased what I thought was a Blu Ray writer. If you look closely at your drive and it has a model # starting with SBC it will only read Blu-Ray not write it.The actual problems with the drive not being recognized by Windows 7 and 8 and maybe even Mac was not ASUS, it is partially a problem with a controller that was installed with a Windows update and 1 or 2 registry entries that together made the drives invisible. The controller is the "Initio default controller". If it is on your system it will be in the Device Manager, I believe, and will need to be deleted or uninstalled and the registry entries for "Low Filters" and/or "High Filters" in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlClass{36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000}. Using regedit.exe the entries for either the Low or High filters or both will need to be deleted from that particular tree. Un plug the drive and then reboot the computer and then plug the drive back into the USB ports. You can see the solution at http://answers.microsoft.com and search for "usb device not recognized in windows 7" and then look for a post by DJ on July 13, 2010. he state that it did not work for him but it just worked for me but I had to unplug the device and shut down the computer and then plug the device back in and in a few minutes the drive reappeared alongside my other drives and it has been working fine.

Sorry to say that it was a defective unit. I love the designspace-saving feature, but I talked to an Asus tech on live chat and he confirmed my conclusion that it was doa. I still love Asus products though and wish I could say it is another great Asus product, but this happens sometimes even to the best.

I bought this drive to go with my brand-new ASUS UX31 Windows 8 touchscreen laptop. The drive is pretty slick, works well, has a beautiful design and is compact. What is beyond me to understand is why ASUS would not bundle the necessary Blu-ray playback software to make this actually play Blu-ray discs, like all other manufacturers do, even ASUS for other models of drives. I would have certainly paid some more for a solution that actually works out of the box. Cyberlink's Power DVD 12 cost me an extra $50, plus the hassle. ASUS could have at least recommended Power DVD or some other software, but nowhere in the box or in the included CD ASUS mentions that this is missing and therefore the drive will do nothing when you pop a Blu-ray movie in it.In addition, ASUS rejected my rebate submission. They did not accept the printed copy of Amazon.com's invoice (!) which contained my name, address, price, order number, date of purchase, date of shipping, and full description of this product in a non-cryptic way! I suppose they only accept traditional cash register receipts, and never heard of online traders such as Amazon. If you are still planning on buying this and submit a rebate, buy it elsewhere because Amazon's invoice won't cut it. Yes, it's unbelievable but it really happened.

This drive works well as a Blu-ray reader, and can copy from Blu-rays at about 1 GB per minute. It works out of the box with both Windows and Mac, but does not include playback software (the software on the CD is only for burning CDs/DVDs, and I would recommend not bothering with it). The USB cable has two plugs, but for both my MacBook Pro and Asus laptop, using just one port was sufficient to power the drive. As for Blu-ray playback, VLC can be used for free in Windows (after downloading two free additional plugins). MakeMKV (free for both Mac and Windows) can be used to create files (without loss of video/audio quality) so that you can then play back your movies in VLC (free for both Mac and Windows). The stand is a unique design and if you do not use the stand then there is an odd looking square hole in the drive, but the stand is solid and works well to save space.I have not used this drive as a CD/DVD reader/writer (I just bought this drive only to read Blu-Rays) so I can not comment on that performance.
