Since PCs and laptops don't usually come with an optical disc drive these days, having something like this on hand in case it's needed will be handy. This unit bundles a laptop formfactor BR-RE drive drive with a hub/docking station including 1x USB-A, 2x USB-C , HDMI, and Ethernet ports, along with a SD card reader. I have not tried the HDMI and Ethernet ports yet as I haven't needed them, but I did try the USB ports with a flash drive and a separate card reader. Both were recognized immediately and worked fine.I did not attempt to burn a DVD or BR with this drive (I'm not even sure I still have good burnable media, haven't burned a disc in years) but successfully played DVD and BR discs using VLC on Windows 11. I'm not sure if the other reviewer who said it wouldn't play anything got a bad unit or just didn't know how to use it (he did say another portable DVD drive wouldn't play, so computer problem or user error seems likely). Note that you MUST use either the supplied USB-C PD power supply or another suitable USB-C PD power source for disc playback to work. If you only plug in the computer USB-C cable, the drive will power up and show up as a device, but playback will fail as there's not enough power provided by a single PC USB port. Now I can have an optical drive on the go plus I don't have to carry the extra dock for HDMI or Ethernet ports. I'm quite pleased with this product.

I've found over the years that I have a better experience with optical drives that have their own source of power (rather than taking power through a USB cable), especially when burning disks. This drive is one of those. It has a typical power supply that plugs in to an outlet, so it can draw all the power it needs. I've included a photo showing that power supply, along with the drive and the USB-C cable (included) that the device needs to talk to your computer. That external power supply allows quite smooth operation of the Blu-Ray player. A Blu-Ray movie comes up pretty quickly, and restarts smoothly after a pause. DVDs work great too.I didn't test Blu-Ray burning because I lacked a blank disk, but DVD and CD burning both went flawlessly. I use Any DVD to burn DVDs, the normal Windows capability to burn audio CDs, and Windows file manager to burn files for backup. All worked fine, and were as fast as any of my previous burner drives. The extras on the drive really set it apart from any optical drive I've ever had before. It has almost precisely the ports I'd like to have to supplement my laptop. Most laptops have limited ports these days, and this device has a wired network port, an HDMI port for an extra monitor, two USB-C ports (which expands availability by one port - remember that this drive itself requires one USB-C port on your computer) and an extra USB-A port.It also has slots for a regular SD card and SDMicro. You can see my SD card in the photo I referenced earlier. I copied over about 30 GB of files, which took less than fifteen minutes - typical for such a copy to a good SD card. I did that test while a Blu-Ray movie was playing off the drive, and noticed no problems doing both at the same time.I wish the cords were a bit longer. The USB-C cable to plug into the computer is only about three feet, so depending on your arrangement, you may want a longer one. The power adapter cord is about four feet - I had to use an extension cord to get to the power outlet. Because of this, I likely won't be taking this drive on the road.Overall, the device feels solid. I've had cheap optical drives that had a flimsy feel to them; this one doesn't feel that way at all.Let me mention once again the dedicated power supply, which sets this drive off from the last two I had. Both of them drew power via USB, and some of the glitches I noticed using them do not seem to be present with this drive.

It took me much longer to get this external Blu-ray burner/drive to work with my Windows 10 laptop. I'm fairly tech savvy, but note that for me, this was not just a plug-and-play experience.First, ensuring the cabling was right wasn't easy. The diagrams provided suggest an easy set-up, but I had to try several configurations before I got the unit to read a disc in the unit.Since I don't have any writable Blu-ray discs, I wasn't able to test this functionality. Once I was able to install a video player and codex files to decode Blu-ray movies--which took more time--I was able to watch a Blu-ray disc via the player. For Windows 10/11, I suggest Leawo Blu-ray player--it's free.It is solidly built and works... I just wish it would have been easier to get working out of the box.

I use a Mac Mini as a server and needed an external CD-ROM to burn backup CDs, so I decided to give this drive a try.First things first, I love the 100GB disc burning capability. Iโve been backing up huge video files without any issues. It burns Blu-rays at 6x, DVDs at 8x, and CDs at a zippy 24x, so the process is quick and painless.Itโs compatible with pretty much everythingโmy Windows laptop, my MacBook, and, of course, my Mac Mini. You do need to use software like PowerDVD or VLC for Blu-ray playback as the unit does not come with a software player, but once thatโs set up, youโre good to go.The compact, portable design is perfect for me since Iโm always on the move. Itโs slim, lightweight, and slips right into my backpack.Overall, this driveโs versatility and performance make it a solid pickup for anyone needing a reliable, high-speed Blu-ray solution.
