Calculate How Much Lava Rock You Need!
Circular or Rounded Fire Pits
To calculate the amount of lava rock needed to fill a circular fire pit or bowl, use the following equation:
Diameter X Diameter X Depth, divided by 24 = pounds of lava rock needed.
We recommend a minimum 2” depth for most installations. For example, a 25" diameter fire pit at the recommended 2” of depth:
25 X 25 X 2, divided by 24 = 52 lbs.
Rectangle Fire Pits
To calculate the amount of lava rock needed to fill a square or rectangular fire pit, use the following equation:
Width X Length X Depth, divided by 19 = pounds of lava rock needed.
We recommend a minimum 2” of depth for most installations. For example, a 20" X 25" fire pit at the recommended 2” of depth:
20 X 25 X 2, divided by 19 = 52 lbs.
Square Fire Pits
To calculate the amount of lava rock needed to fill a square or rectangular fire pit, use the following equation:
Width X Length X Depth, divided by 19 = pounds of lava rock needed.
We recommend a minimum 2” of depth for most installations. For example, a 20" X 25" fire pit at the recommended 2” of depth:
20 X 25 X 2, divided by 19 = 52 lbs.
Flat Landscape
To calculate the amount of lava rock needed to fill your landscape area, use the following equation:
Width X Length X Depth, divided by 19 = pounds of lava rock needed.
We recommend a minimum 1.5” of depth for most installations. For example, a 48" X 48" planter at the recommended 1.5” of depth:
48 X 48 X 1.5, divided by 19 = 182 lbs. (Make sure to put down weed barrier fabric first!)
Lava Rock Accessories

I ordered the 3-5” rocks. They arrived quickly in a plastic bag and box. They were just as described a good variety of size. They were dirty so I throughly washed them with a hose. Would buy again.

We purchased a few packages of these lava rocks for our outdoor fire pit. We finally got it built and turned it on. We had it on low and pretty soon pieces were flying off. Once I contacted the seller I was told they had received a lot of rain and the rocks could be full of water. Maybe our low heat was still “too high” to let them dry out even though they did not seem wet (but I’m not an expert). We read the directions and safety precautions. Not sure why we kept having issues, but the company made it right with us so we have nothing bad to say. The color was not really black, more reddish so maybe that was the issue? Either way heat them slow and pay attention so you do not get hurt. Based on reviews it seems hit and miss on if they explode, but there seem to be more people with good reviews, just follow directions.

It's funny to write this, but these were a great box of rocks. They were of good size and have worked well in our chiminea. Personally, I wouldn't order any rocks smaller than these as some of these were in the 2-3 inch range.

Just how excited can one get about lava rock. I need some lava rock to augment what was in my fire pit. I got the small and may have been better off with the next size up. Either way this product works as advertised and I recommend it.

The fact that the weight of the rocks were much heavier than those currently in the portable LP fire pit should have caught our attention as a warning sign that these things were DANGEROUS, because it meant that they were more dense (as compared to the rocks that came with the fire pit) and wouldn't be able to handle the heat from the flame!!! On a non-humid 65 degree summer evening in Oregon, under a covered concrete patio, within minutes, the rocks began cracking and popping such that it was sending 1/2" and larger sized pieces of lava rock shooting every which direction about every 5-10 seconds. Some hitting us directly, while others shot upwards of 8 - 12' in the air hitting the underside of patio cover. Reminded me of the sound of a bag of popcorn popping in the microwave, to which we promptly turned off the fire pit and called it a night. Thank goodness nothing nearby was damaged or worse yet, none of us (4 adults) were injured. The following morning it looked like someone had peppered the patio area with pieces of lava rocks. Did we return them? No...for $20 they aren't worth our time to fuss with it, but rather just tossed them in the garbage and purchased locally. Buyer BEWARE!

I needed to add Lava rocks to fill in my gas log set. I picked this one only because the rocks looked like the ones I already had, and the price was reasonable as compared with other online sights. I measured my rocks to get a good match. It did take 12 days to arrive (including the weekends). Very pleased with the quality. They look exactly like the photo, are not dusty, a nice amount of 10 lbs filling an 11 x 8 x 6 inch postal box.

I heat these rocks in a pan while pre-warming our oven for baking sourdough. Once the oven comes to temp and the dough is ready to go in, I pour water onto the rocks, launch the dough on a baking stone and immediately close the oven. The stream created during this process helps the dough spring while slightly delaying a crust from hardening, alerting the bread to rise a bit more during the “oven spring” phase.These rocks work great for my baking use case.

can i just say that these are the best dang lava rocks i have ever seen!!!!!! worked like a CHARM. truly an incredible product. 10/10 would recommend to a friend, relative, acquaintance, even an arch nemesis, because EVERYONE deserves to have a lava rock experience as amazing as mine. PICTURE THIS: you're sitting out on your brand new deck on a chilly July evening. you're surrounded by all of your favorite things- friends, family, pets, an ice cold beer (or a lukewarm beer, or a Ginger Ale its really YOUR preference), but you suddenly notice that everyone seems cold, and they are ready to wrap up the evening. if only there was a classy way to start a fire!!! ONLY ONE THING CAN SAVE THE NIGHT AND KEEP YOUR SUAREE GOING ALL NIGHT LONG- AND THAT IS RED 3/4 INCH LAVA ROCK. these lava rock work like a CHARM. pieces were the PERFECT size and they filled the pit PERFECTLY. they added a nice touch to the traditional fire pit scene, and for that i will be forever thankful.
