This tape is marketed as joist tape, but it has a lot of other uses. It's thick, waterproof, and extremely durable. I'm using it to seal a crawlspace and to improve the weatherproofing of a shed I am building. It works great for both purposes. It's very sticky, and it's easy to unroll and cut and use. I've tried other brands and I think this is the best overall in terms of quality and quantity.

Easy to use once you get the backing to start to come off it adheres to itself and treated lumber easily and as long as you don't stick the sticky side to itself it can be repositioned if your joists are clean and preferably dry. It doesn't stick so well that you cannot reposition it especially on clean wood and painted surfaces and bare and painted metal. It is thick enough to not be damaged if you take reasonable care when repositioning decking and materials once it is in place. It looks like it will function over the long term as a replacement for and attaching to metal flashing to direct water.

The beams of my deck are made from sistering two 2x8's together which makes them approximately three inches wide. I slapped some of this on the top to protect them and keep water out of the gap between the 2x8's. So far it seems to be working great. I'd say it's a worthwhile investment to protect your lumber from water ingress and thus accelerated rot.

I’m replacing the deck boards on a deck and using this butyl tape this time. After 15 years, some of the structural 2x lumber was beginning to rot. Hopefully, this will prevent rotting on the new deck. The label on this roll looks like it had some rough treatment, but the tape looks to be in good condition. The tape has clear plastic on the sticky side that you remove and then stick to the 2x lumber. The clear plastic can be difficult to remove but using a thin knife to get under the plastic and pull it back helps. A double joist is 3” wide and this tape is 3” wide. I wasn’t thinking when I ordered it but it is just too narrow for a double joist. You should have a little extra to wrap over the edges, but this is not wide enough. You also need to be very careful when installing to make sure you follow the lumber exactly. I plan to just use this on a single joist and buy wider tape for my double joists. I don’t know why they even sell a 3” width since it is too narrow for a double joist and too wide for a single joist. I’ve found the butyl can leak out and make unrolling the tape difficult on some brands. Not so with this tape, none of the butyl has leaked out. I tried a small piece, and it sticks well. New treated lumber can be very wet which will limit adhesion. Letting it dry for a few days may help initial adhesion. Adhesion is only an issue until your deck boards are installed. I’ve found that stretching the tape a little before sticking down, then pressing down with your hand works just as well or even a little better than smoothing with a putty knife. Most brands of joist tape that I have purchased look identical. I suspect there is one manufacturer for much of the tape available and individual companies then add their own label. This 50-foot roll is smaller diameter than other 50-foot rolls I have which means it is not as thick as other brands. It may not be significant but since it is the same price as many others, I’d look for a different brand next time.

I wish I would of discovered this product sooner. I do plan to use it when I repair part of my deck but I also want to use this on the frame of a wood picnic table and a few other outdoor projects that are subject to lots of rain and consequent decay. The tape is very thick and sticky. Seems like a very durable item that will protect boards that are sandwiched together.

I ended up just a bit short on joist tape for my deck remodel and decided to order this brand to see if I liked it better. The other brand was very stiff and challenging to get laid flat. This tape works great, and I had no issue getting it to stick flat to the top of my joists!
