About this item

  • PROGRAMMABLE WITH ALERT SYSTEM: This thermometer has a programmable feature so the vibrant green backlight will flash until one of the bottom three buttons is pressed to turn the flashing off.
  • SPECIALLY ENGINEERED PAN CLIP: Adjustable pan clip will hang on tight to most pans so the thermometer will not get dislodged during stirring.

  • BATTERY INCLUDED: One CR2032 battery is installed in the thermometer for your convenience.
  • IMPORTANT: Thermometer will be hot after use. Use potholders or oven mitts when handling hot thermometer.

I tested this in ice water, and it read 34 degrees F. Then I looked up the boiling temperature for my elevation and it read the correct temperature in boiling water (208F at my elevation). I tried following the directions that come with it to calibrate it in ice water, and it messed up the boiling temperature by a lot. I tried calibrating it again, and it thankfully errored out and re-set itself, so at least it measures accurately at higher temperatures. I don't recommend trying to calibrate it.I also tested it against a couple of mercury oral thermometers at around 100F, and it read one degree too high. I put a sticker on the back reminding me how much to subtract at 100 and 34 degrees. I'm using this for L. Reuteri yogurt making, so I need to know the accurate temperature at both 180F for pasteurizing non-UHT milk for 20 minutes, and temperatures around 100F for culturing. This thermometer is working for my purposes, especially at the higher temperature. It clips nicely to my pot, which helps so much. I also find it helpful that it shows the temperature to the nearest tenth of a degree. Even if it is not perfectly accurate to that level, it still helps to see the tenths so you can see if the temperature is going up or down.

I bought this to make candy for Christmas. I tested it in boiling water and it was off a few degrees. Since we live at a higher altitude I have to adjust for that so I included the few degrees it thermometer was off and my candies came out perfect. I loved the digital readout and the metal clip really hung onto my pan. I could clip it onto the pan with the thermometer raised out of the syrup until I was ready to slide it in and it worked perfectly. I would certainly recommend this if you are thinking about getting it. Just remember to test it before you start using it in case you need to make adjustments.

I use this thermometer for ice-cream making, which is similar to candy-making in that you have to bring the custard to a specific temperature for a certain amount of time-- but not too high or too long or it will curdle. And you need to keep stirring. My last thermometer didn't have a pot-side clip, so it accidentally took a bath in hot milk and died. This one can clip to the side of the pot, and is held firmly at the level you determine by the simple spring clip-- you can keep it OFF the bottom of the pan and it tilts inward toward the center of the pot, exactly as you need.Quickly change the readout from degrees F to C by pressing the button once, long-press to turn it off. Very satisfying purchase, the thermometer feels heavy and robust in construction, and the long probe makes it useful for everything from turkeys to soup pots.

to confirm whether or not it's accurate, I tested it in frozen and boiling water, and the readings were within the error margins of 0 and 100 C (that's 100 and 212 for you fahrenheit speaking people). The clamp holds it in place pretty well and the depth of the top can also be adjusted with ease.

The thermometer mostly performs properly, but every other digital thermometer I've owned that has an "alert" temperature beeps when the temperature is reached. Not this thermometer. An alert that only works when you're looking at is not an alert at all. You can just look at the temperature yourself. Flashing green isn't good enough. Get distracted or something while making candy and turn your back, you may miss an important warning. Perhaps it was a mistake to not notice that the advertising copy says nothing about an audio alert, but, as I said above, it's a feature I consider standard for such devices. So be forewarned.I'm amending this review even before it's been published. I also reduced it to 1 star. I made a batch of taffy with this thermometer and it turned out WAY too soft and almost too sticky to handle for pulling. The taffy was undercooked. Then I did a second batch and put it and two other thermometers in the pan (I had an old dial thermometer and my daughter's liquid candy thermometer). Besides those, I took readings with my infrared thermometer. When I finally got to the right temperature according to my three other reliable thermometers, this digital one was showing a full 20 degrees F higher than the consensus. My first run was basically 20 degrees too cool. This is a defective product. It's going back.

Love this digital thermometer. I have an old simple thermometer that you read the numbers. The digital one is so easy to use, read and love that it beeps when it reaches the right temperature. Is so great when making candy.

This is AMAZING. I make candy every year. Each year, it is HARD to read the temp with my old school lame standard thermometer (It fogs up, I can't read it, I miss the temp I need). This year, I literally burned by face with a splash of hot toffee. This will happen NO MORE. This digital therm is the solution. Set it to the temp, it beeps, you take your candy off the burner. DONE. Perfect candy and injury free Holidays.

There's nothing wrong with this product. I don't like that there's no way to turn it OFF - you just have to let it go to sleep after using it. Not a big deal. But I only use these for candymaking ... and temperatures have to be so exact (if you miss by two or three degrees, you may have to throw the batch out and start over). I had a CDN model that set off an alarm three degrees ahead of the target temperature, which I loved! Went through three of them. But this fall, when it was time to replace it AGAIN, the CDN was twice the price of the Taylor. So I bought the Taylor. Again, it's fine, there's nothing wrong with it, although I'll bet the pot clip won't last a year. Having now missed the exact temp on two batches of caramels, I'm ordering another CDN no matter what the price is.
