Works good. Just a little big. My PC tower is for soundproofing so doesn't come with a slot for a disc drive. I would check one of the many price watching sites because this price fluctuates a lot. I noticed when it went out of stock it bottomed out in price. So I'd watch for when inventory gets low and then take a stab at it. I'm talking getting this baby for $60 even. Definitely worth that! This hardware is old but I guess the only update I would make is if it could be smaller. For sure not convenient for carrying around with a laptop. Check dimensions before buying. Also On/Off switch is in stupid place behind unit. You are not going to be using a disc drive all the time so I think it' should of been placed better. Also it's physically hard to slide on and off. You have to use your fingernails a little and put some effort into it. I guess that's good for not getting bumped but this is made to sit on a desk anyway so I don't get it? For the price though I looked around and you really can't do any better for speed and ability. It is a bit noisey which defeats the purpose of my sound dampening tower but like I said. It's not on very much. Also the Blu-ray driver was easy to install. I don't know what people are talking about paying one hundred dollars for firmware? It's all over the internet for free. Easy buy at the price I got it. I looked far an wide and for ability and price Amazon wins for sure. Don't waste your time elsewhere.

There are two versions of this drive; a standard version (BW-12D1S-U), and a LITE version (BW-12D1S-U LITE). This review is for the LITE version which DOES NOT include software for playing Blu-Ray media. The box includes the following:Optical DriveQuick Install GuideSoftware Disc (Power2Go 8, PowerBackup 2.5, ASUS Firmware update) - Windows OS onlyUSB 3.0 CablePower Adapter and Power CordOverall Impression:The drive itself is attractive, but like others have stated is very bulky compared to other Blu-Ray burners. It is basically an internal Blu-Ray drive inside a housing to make it an "external" drive. It cannot be powered by your computer's USB port, and instead must be plugged into a 110v outlet through the separate power adapter that is supplied with the unit. It also does not include the base for vertical mounting. It's write speed is fast for Blu-Ray at 12x, and data transfer is fast with USB 3.0. It is compatible with USB 2.0, but of course you will not achieve the max write speeds with this interface.4 Star up to this point.Mac Owners Beware:This is where my review takes a sharp dip in rating. While the drive seems to work ok on computers running Windows OS, Mac users aren't as fortunate. The package and the ASUS website are very misleading by stating that it is Mac OS compatible. The only reason ASUS states that is because if you plug the drive into a Mac and insert a STANDARD definition disc, the software included with your Mac will recognize the drive and play the disc. You cannot watch or burn Blu-Ray discs without purchasing third-party software that may or may not actually work. While researching third-party software sites, some people have had success with third-party software, and some have not. Neither the included disc, nor the ASUS website includes software for Mac OS (see below photo of ASUS support website). Since I purchased this for my father's iMac, I'll be returning it.UPDATE 1/31/17: I assumed that you couldn't burn a Blu-Ray disc since there was no software supplied for MacOS, and that my Mac wouldn't recognize Blu-Ray discs inserted into this drive. There is a possibility that a basic burning capability exists using the tools supplied with MacOS (see comments section). I'll test this and update my post when complete.UPDATE 2/4/17: Basic burning capability DOES exist in MacOS. However, plugged into my USB 3.0 port the max burn speed available is 8x, and not the 12x that the drive specifies. The computer didn't recognize the burned disc at first, but did once I ejected and reinserted it. Updating to 3 stars from 2. Only to 3 because I still can't get past the fact that no Mac software whatsoever is available from ASUS to take full advantage of the drive's capabilities, and it is a heavy bulky monster of a drive (looks like an external CD/DVD drive I had 10-15 years ago) which makes it a good choice for desktop but not for portability with a laptop.

A quality internal drive squirreled away in an odd external case; or at least I think so.I bought this because is is an ASUS. My mother board is an ASUS. My other DVD R/W drives are ASUS. Most of the working internals on my machines are ASUS. When the hardware wars are over, all that will be left will be Apple and ASUS.I am not disappointed. It plugged in and worked... first time. It burns and reads everything with no problem. I use it with a USB 3.0 and it seems to work as fast as any other USB 3.0 burner, although I did not and probably never will run any bench-test timing on it. I really don't care that much.I found the door mechanism unusual. When I finally found the button that opens it (hint: it is the right front face of the drive; yeah, the vertical side that should be just part of the face), it made a clunking sound and the drive tray pushed its way out, forcing the drive door to swing down and away. When the tray retracts, the door closes.Being a curious sort, I trapped the door open on one of those cycles and discovered that there is what appears to be a regular internal Blu-Ray drive inside an external drive housing. I have attached an image showing the drive inside the housing. I used my faithful Bic pen to hold the door open while I took the photo. There really isn't a blue part of the door; it's the pen.) I also discovered that the odd vertical bar-button on the case actually just presses a disk eject button like you see on every internal drive, on the right lower corner of the drive face. It's another way to make the external case work with an internal drive, I guess.Don't get me wrong. For the price and the internal drive quality, I have no complaints. I was just surprised to find that they've packaged an internal in an external case and sold it as a unit. Very well, ASUS.I must say, too, that I needed a drive very badly very quickly. My old drive failed and I had need of another one THAT DAY. In my area, Amazon delivered the drive on the very same day and even before the end of the work day. I would have spent three hours driving, buying and driving back if I'd had to go buy one of these in a retail store, assuming I could get one of this quality for this price. I'm very pleased with Amazon and their sellers.
