I’ve tried using newspaper, lighter cubes, wood fire starters, and more in my charcoal chimney. None could light this charcoal. It was a complete waste of money. Not sure what this coal is made of, but it would probably make a good fire resistant material.

This was not exactly what I was expecting when I ordered. However, I really like this charcoal. It gets hot fast, produces very little ash! Very glad I purchased it

Yes, the charcoal performed as one would expect from a binchotan type charcoal- Basically no smoke: Yes- Ultra high heat: Absolutely- Long lasting: Yes... but...The 'but' in the last point brings up two big issues I had with the charcoal that really came to be a problem last time I used it to make yakitori. Most of the charcoal was on the smaller side and there was absolutely no uniformity to the shape. The size differences were a small as single break off of a kit kat bar to a baseball size chunks that I had to break apart with a hammer. The random size and shape of the charcoal made getting the initial heat distribution a task, however, once that is sorted out then you have to deal with the uneven burn rate brought on by differences in charcoal size. I regularly had to reposition the charcoal and offset low/dead spots between skewers that also had to be shuffled around more than usual.Obviously this is a bigger issue when cooking chicken and I will still use this binchotan for cooking red meat and smaller amounts of chicken.

The box arrived in good shape but I'd say 90% of the charcoal was just small chunks that would fall out of the charcoal starter grate. Small pieces of charcoal that burn up fast. The large pieces that I did get burnt nice and hot but I can't recommend based on what I received. I would have been better off with hardwood charcoal from Home Depot that is much cheaper.

First use of a binchotan charcoal and blown away with the quality difference. Extreme heat for a quick sear and no smoke from the charcoal. Took a little longer to get the charcoal lite but now I know. The texture and moisture of my steak was beyond fancy steakhouse quality. Family wants more!

I've tried a lot of different charcoals, they all have their place. Cost, heat level, consistency, availability, etc. I had my hesitation with cost but wanted to give a try. I was really impressed! For those looking for an ultra premium charcoal, this is it!This charcoal burned super clean, there was virtually no smell. That allowed the taste of grilled items to shine! I was expecting it to be more difficult to light because of the process used to make it, but found it very easy. There was virtually no flame, either, except for drippings igniting. The heat was AMAZING and gave a great sear! Something else that stood out was how little ash was created. Jealous Devil's lump charcoal, as is common with lump, already was low ash, but this went beyond that. Once my cook was complete I cut off oxygen and still had most of the charcoal left. More cooks, same charcoal, helps with value of the purchase. I've heard you can extinguish with water, too, will be trying that.Yes, it costs more than other charcoals. For me, I found with worth it, especially with reuse. Meat is expensive. For some cooks, I'm okay with investing in even higher end charcoal to let that meat shine! The fuel makes a difference, loved my experience with Jealous Devil Onyx.
